"Should I take PTE or IELTS?" — this is the most common question Nepali students ask. Both tests are accepted by Australia and Canada. Both test English skills. But they are very different in 2026, and one is likely better for your specific situation.

Preparation Tip

Improve Your PTE Score

Nepali students often struggle with Oral Fluency. My 15-day batch focuses on the speaking and fluency criteria that PTE evaluates — with targeted practice and feedback.

For Canada PR: PTE Core Has Changed the Game

For Canadian immigration — Express Entry, Provincial Nominee Programs — the government uses the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) system. Historically, this space was dominated by IELTS General Training.

That changed with the official approval of PTE Core by IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada).

Important distinction:

  • PTE Academic = for study permits and Canadian university admissions
  • PTE Core = specifically for economic immigration, permanent residency (Express Entry, PNP), and citizenship pathways

Note: Canada's Student Direct Stream (SDS) was officially closed on 8 November 2024. Study permit applications now go through the regular study permit stream. English test acceptance for immigration can change — always verify current accepted tests on the IRCC Express Entry page or with a registered immigration consultant.

CLB Score Mapping: IELTS vs PTE Core

CLB LevelIELTS General (L / R / W / S)PTE Core minimum (L / R / W / S)
CLB 10 (Expert)8.5 / 8.0 / 7.5 / 7.589 / 88 / 90 / 89
CLB 9 (Target for max CRS)8.0 / 7.0 / 7.0 / 7.082 / 78 / 88 / 84
CLB 87.5 / 6.5 / 6.5 / 6.571 / 69 / 79 / 76
CLB 7 (Min for FSW)6.0 / 6.0 / 6.0 / 6.060 / 60 / 69 / 68

The PTE Core figures above are the official IRCC minimum scores per CLB band, not ranges. Source: canada.ca — Express Entry language requirements (PTE Core CLB conversion). Achieving a higher score than the minimum within the same CLB band does not raise your CLB; you only move up when you hit the next-level minimum on every skill.

Because PTE Core is fully computer-evaluated, many Nepali candidates find the writing and speaking thresholds more predictable. Verify the current CLB mapping on the IRCC language requirements page.

For Australia PR: New Asymmetric Thresholds (August 2025)

Australia changed PTE requirements on August 7, 2025. The old flat "79 across all skills" for Superior English is gone. The new thresholds are asymmetric and apply to tests taken on or after 7 August 2025:

Proficiency LevelPR PointsListeningReadingWritingSpeaking
Competent (minimum)047485154
Proficient1058596976
Superior2069708588

This is a significant change. Superior English now demands near-native Writing (85) and Speaking (88) — far higher than Listening and Reading. Your preparation strategy must account for this asymmetry. Always confirm the current thresholds on the DHA English language requirements page.

What This Means for Nepali Students

If you're targeting 20 PR points (Superior English), Writing and Speaking require significantly more preparation than before. Strategy-based coaching now includes specific Writing and Speaking intensives calibrated to these new thresholds.

Cost Comparison in Nepal (2026)

PTEIELTS
Test fee (approximate)NPR 32,600 (~$220)NPR 34,000 (~$230)
With voucher~NPR 27,000 (verify availability)No vouchers
Coaching (strategy-based)Rs. 2,500–15,000Rs. 20,000–50,000 (typical institutes)
Total (one attempt, estimate)Rs. 29,500–42,000Rs. 54,000–84,000

PTE can be significantly cheaper overall, especially with vouchers and strategy-focused coaching. All fees are approximate — confirm current fees before booking.

Why Many Nepali Students Choose PTE in 2026

  1. No human examiner — more consistent speaking evaluation
  2. Faster results — usually 2 business days, supporting faster visa processing
  3. Learnable patterns — the AI rewards specific behaviors you can practice
  4. Lower overall cost — test vouchers and strategy-based coaching
  5. Computer-native format — comfortable for those used to screens

When IELTS Might Be Better

  • Your target institution specifically requires IELTS
  • You're already close to your IELTS target and have invested in preparation
  • You strongly prefer face-to-face speaking evaluation

Bottom Line

For Nepali students targeting Australia or Canada in 2026, the right test depends on your specific pathway. For Australia PR and university study, PTE Academic is widely accepted. For Canada PR via Express Entry or PNP, PTE Core is the correct choice. For Canadian university study permits, PTE Academic applies.

The key is preparation method and choosing the right test. These strategies can improve consistency, but your score depends on your English ability and task performance.

People Also Ask

Is PTE harder than IELTS?

PTE and IELTS test similar English skills but in very different formats. Many Nepali students find PTE Academic easier on Speaking because the AI does not penalise non-native accents (only intelligibility matters), and PTE Reading and Listening are computer-based with no human examiner. IELTS may suit students who prefer handwritten essays and a face-to-face Speaking interview. PTE Academic results are typically delivered within 2 business days versus IELTS's 3-13 days.

Is 79 PTE easy to score?

PTE Academic 79 in each skill (Superior English) is challenging — it corresponds to a strong C1 CEFR level. Most Nepali students need 5-8 weeks of focused preparation on the blocking skill (often Speaking Oral Fluency or Writing Grammar) to push past 79. It is achievable with consistent practice on official Pearson scored mocks, daily Read Aloud, and Write From Dictation drills. Smriti Simkhada has a 90/90 perfect score and coaches the criteria-specific approach that helps Nepali students cross the 79 ceiling.

Is 1 month enough for PTE?

For most Nepali students with conversational English, one month of structured preparation is enough to hit 65+ in each skill. Reaching 79+ for Superior English typically takes 5-8 weeks of focused practice on the blocking skill. The realistic timeline depends on your starting score, target, and the gap in enabling skills. Book a free score assessment to map your specific timeline before committing to an exam date. Verify exam booking availability on the official Pearson PTE website before finalising your schedule.
