Your PTE Academic score report gives you four numbers. Home Affairs turns those four numbers into 0, 10 or 20 points on the skilled migration points test, and the rule is strict: your lowest skill decides your band. This page shows the official thresholds, then works through sample score profiles so you can see exactly which band your PTE score for Australia PR reaches and how many points a retake could add.
It is written for applicants who are already in Australia or planning from Nepal, India or elsewhere. Every threshold below is quoted from the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) English-language pages and its points table, last checked on 3 October 2026.

PTE Score for Australia PR: The Official Bands
PTE Academic tests taken on or after 7 August 2025 are assessed against component-specific DHA bands, and each of the four skills must meet its own minimum. A high overall score does not count on its own. The old "79 in each skill" rule for Superior English applies only to tests taken before 7 August 2025.
| DHA English level | Listening | Reading | Writing | Speaking | Points (189/190/491) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Superior | 69 | 70 | 85 | 88 | 20 |
| Proficient | 58 | 59 | 69 | 76 | 10 |
| Competent (visa minimum) | 47 | 48 | 51 | 54 | 0 |
Source: Department of Home Affairs, Superior English, Proficient English and Competent English pages (PTE Academic, tests on or after 7 August 2025), and the subclass 189 points table. Last verified 3 October 2026.
Three facts the table does not show:
- Competent English is the floor, not Proficient. The subclass 189 page says that at the time of invitation you must have at least competent English. Proficient and Superior are optional, but they are where the points are.
- The bands are the same for 189, 190 and 491. The visas differ in nomination points (190 adds 5, 491 adds 15), not in the English thresholds.
- Only PTE Academic counts. PTE Core is a Canada product and is not on the DHA list. See PTE Core if Canada is your plan.
Superior and Proficient English for Australia PR
These two labels are what students ask me about most, so here they are in plain words. Superior English is Listening 69, Reading 70, Writing 85 and Speaking 88, and it is worth 20 points. Proficient English is Listening 58, Reading 59, Writing 69 and Speaking 76, and it is worth 10 points. These bands apply to PTE Academic tests taken on or after 7 August 2025; a test taken on or before 6 August 2025 is judged against the earlier bands. Home Affairs accepts a result from a test taken in the 3 years before your visa application, depending on the subclass. Home Affairs reads the four component scores from one PTE Academic test result. There is no rule that lets you combine a Speaking 88 from one test with a Writing 85 from another — each test is assessed on its own.
Which Band Does Your PTE Score Reach? A Decision Path
To find your band, compare each skill against the table from the top row down and stop at the first row where all four skills pass. Write your four scores down and work through these questions in order:
- Is every skill at or above L69 / R70 / W85 / S88? Yes: Superior English, 20 points. No: go to step 2.
- Is every skill at or above L58 / R59 / W69 / S76? Yes: Proficient English, 10 points. Note which skills missed Superior, because those are your retake targets. No: go to step 3.
- Is every skill at or above L47 / R48 / W51 / S54? Yes: Competent English, 0 points, but you meet the English floor for these visas. No: this result does not meet the visa minimum, and you need another test.
- Was the test taken before 7 August 2025? Then it is assessed under the earlier rules, not this table, and DHA says such a result may still be valid for up to 3 years depending on the visa subclass. Check the DHA page for your visa before relying on it.
Four Worked Examples: Scores to Points
The examples below use the DHA points table: age 25 to 32 earns 30 points, age 33 to 39 earns 25, a bachelor degree earns 15, the Australian study requirement earns 5, and a single applicant (or one whose partner is an Australian citizen or PR) earns 10. You need at least 65 points to be invited: DHA says that if you do not obtain 65 points you will not be invited to apply. These profiles are illustrations built from the official table, not real student results.
Example 1: Strong overall, stuck on Proficient
Scores: Listening 72, Reading 75, Writing 81, Speaking 86. Every skill clears Proficient (58 / 59 / 69 / 76). Listening and Reading also clear Superior, but Writing 81 is 4 short of 85 and Speaking 86 is 2 short of 88. Result: Proficient, 10 points. A retake that lifts Writing to 85 and Speaking to 88, while holding the other two, moves this applicant to 20 points.
Example 2: One skill drops the whole band
Scores: Listening 66, Reading 61, Writing 70, Speaking 74. Speaking 74 is 2 below the Proficient minimum of 76, so the result falls to Competent, 0 points, even though the other three skills clear Proficient. Two Speaking points are worth 10 migration points here. That is the cheapest 10 points on the whole points test, and it is why we always read the lowest skill first.
Example 3: What 10 extra points do to a full points total
A 29-year-old with a bachelor degree, the Australian study requirement and no partner claim: age 30 + education 15 + Australian study 5 + single 10 = 60 points before English.
- With Competent English: 60. Below 65, so this profile would not be invited.
- With Proficient English: 70.
- With Superior English: 80.
In the 4 June 2026 subclass 189 round, the most common occupation cut-off was 80 points, with cut-offs ranging from 65 to 100 by occupation. For this profile, Superior English is the difference between sitting at 70 and reaching the most common cut-off. Meeting a cut-off is not a guarantee: ties are broken by the date your EOI reached that score.
Example 4: State nomination (subclass 190)
A 35-year-old with a bachelor degree, 5 to 8 years of overseas skilled employment and no partner claim: age 25 + education 15 + overseas employment 10 + single 10 = 60. Proficient English adds 10 and 190 nomination adds 5, for 75 points. Superior English would make it 85. States also apply their own occupation lists and criteria on top of the points test, so check the state you are targeting.
Points values: DHA subclass 189 points table (verified 11 June 2026). Round data: DHA SkillSelect invitation rounds, 4 June 2026 round (re-checked 3 October 2026: still the latest published round, with no 2026-27 round yet published). Round cut-offs change every round.
Should You Retake? What Changes and What Does Not
A PTE retake is worth it when the skills that are short are only a few points from the next band, because English points jump in steps of 10. Make a gap list like Example 1: for each skill below the next band, write down the number of points missing.
- Retake if: one or two skills are a few points short of the next band and your points total is below the cut-offs your occupation has been seeing.
- Think twice if: you already hold Superior, or your occupation's recent cut-offs sit well below your current total. More English points will not change an outcome you already have.
- What a retake does not change: PTE Academic has no single-skill retake, so you sit the full test again and all four skills must hold their bands on the new report.
- Timing: DHA says a result must come from a test in the 3 years before your visa application, depending on the subclass, and English is assessed at the time of invitation. A result close to its 3-year mark needs care; see our PTE score validity guide.
Common Mistakes With PTE Scores for Australia PR
- Using the old "79 each" rule. For tests on or after 7 August 2025, Superior is L69 / R70 / W85 / S88. Writing and Speaking now need more than 79; Listening and Reading need less.
- Reading the overall score. DHA bands are per skill. An overall of 84 with Writing 76 is Proficient, not Superior.
- Treating Proficient as the visa minimum. The floor is Competent. Proficient and Superior earn points.
- Quoting an old round. Cut-offs move every round. The "85 points for most occupations" figure from the November 2025 round is out of date; the 4 June 2026 round had a most common cut-off of 80.
- Booking PTE Core for Australia. Home Affairs lists PTE Academic, not PTE Core.
Step-by-Step Plan to Reach Your Target Band
- Pick the target from your points total, not from habit. Add up your other points first (Example 3). If Proficient already puts you comfortably above your occupation's recent cut-offs, Superior may not be worth months of work.
- List the gap per skill. Superior needs L69 / R70 / W85 / S88; the usual gaps are in Writing and Speaking, because those minimums are the highest.
- Read your enabling and task-level feedback on the score report to find which question types are pulling the short skill down.
- Practise the integrated tasks that feed the short skill. Several PTE Academic tasks score two skills at once; Summarize Group Discussion, for example, is scored on Speaking and Listening.
- Book the test with time for one more attempt before any deadline tied to your invitation or visa application.
Tips for Nepali and South Asian Applicants in Australia
- Speaking 88 is about fluency and pace more than accent. A clear Nepali, Hindi or Bengali accent is not the problem we see most; hesitations and restarts are.
- Writing 85 needs accurate grammar in every sentence of the essay and Summarize Written Text. A memorised template that ignores the prompt does not get there.
- If you are working shifts in Sydney or Melbourne, schedule practice around your roster rather than squeezing it in after a late shift. The team of Smriti Simkhada runs 1-on-1 coaching in Australian, Nepal and Gulf time zones, with plans of 7 days, 17 days or 1 month.

Frequently Asked Questions
What PTE score do I need for Australia PR in 2026?
For PTE Academic tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, the visa minimum is Competent English (L47, R48, W51, S54), which earns 0 points. Proficient English (L58, R59, W69, S76) earns 10 points and Superior English (L69, R70, W85, S88) earns 20 points on the subclass 189, 190 and 491 points test.
Do I need 79 in each skill for Superior English?
Not for tests taken on or after 7 August 2025. Superior English is now Listening 69, Reading 70, Writing 85 and Speaking 88. The "79 in each skill" rule applies only to PTE Academic tests taken before that date.
Does my overall PTE score matter for Australia PR points?
No. DHA sets a minimum for each of the four skills and your lowest skill decides the band. An overall score is not used to award English points.
How many points is Superior English worth compared with Proficient?
Superior English is worth 20 points and Proficient English is worth 10, so moving from Proficient to Superior adds 10 points to your EOI total.
Is the PTE score requirement different for 189, 190 and 491?
No. The English bands and the 0, 10 and 20 points are the same for all three. The visas differ in nomination points: 190 adds 5 and 491 adds 15, and states can set their own criteria for nomination.
How long can I use a PTE score for Australia PR?
Pearson's score report is valid for 2 years, but DHA accepts English results from a test taken in the 3 years before your visa application, depending on the visa subclass. English is assessed at invitation, so check the dates before relying on an older result.
Is the points test changing?
A rewrite of the points test was announced in the 2026-27 Federal Budget on 12 May 2026 but has not been legislated. The current points table still applies, and no new point values should be relied on until the law changes.
Conclusion: Your Next Step and the Official Checks
