Quick answer: PTE to IELTS equivalence
Per Pearson's official July 2025 concordance: PTE 63 ≈ IELTS 7.0, PTE 71 ≈ IELTS 7.5, PTE 79 ≈ IELTS 8.0, PTE 86 ≈ IELTS 8.5, PTE 90 ≈ IELTS 9.0. The PTE overall is not a simple average of your four skills — Pearson scores every item across the test — so treat any calculator overall as an estimate.

Your gap to 79: Listening needs +14, Reading needs +14, Writing needs +14, Speaking needs +14. Listening is your blocking skill — fix it first, because one weak skill caps every pathway that needs all four bands.
The overall shown here is a simple average of your four skills — an estimate only. Pearson calculates the official overall score from your performance on every scored item across the test, so your real overall can differ by a few points. IELTS equivalence uses Pearson's official July 2025 concordance and is a comparison, not an acceptance guarantee.

What the calculator tells you
Overall estimate. Pearson computes the official PTE Academic overall from your performance on every scored item across the test — not from a simple average of the four communicative skills. The calculator's average is usually within a few points of the real overall, which is why it is labelled an estimate.
IELTS equivalent. The calculator maps your overall estimate to the closest IELTS Academic overall band using Pearson's official July 2025 concordance: PTE 63 ≈ IELTS 7.0, PTE 71 ≈ IELTS 7.5, PTE 79 ≈ IELTS 8.0. For a head-to-head test comparison, see PTE vs IELTS for Nepali students.
DHA band (Australia). For tests taken on/after 7 August 2025, the Department of Home Affairs awards skilled-migration English points using component-specific bands: Superior (+20) needs Listening 69, Reading 70, Writing 85, Speaking 88; Proficient (+10) needs L58 / R59 / W69 / S76; Competent (0 points, the floor to apply) needs L47 / R48 / W51 / S54. The full pathway breakdown lives on the PTE for Australia hub and the subclass 189 guide.

PTE score conversion: common questions
What IELTS score is PTE 79 equivalent to?
Per Pearson’s official July 2025 concordance (updated for the enhanced PTE Academic), IELTS overall 8.0 maps to PTE Academic 79. Other key points: IELTS 7.0 ≈ PTE 63, IELTS 7.5 ≈ PTE 71, IELTS 8.5 ≈ PTE 86, and IELTS 9.0 ≈ PTE 90. Older tables that put IELTS 6.5 around PTE 58–64 are superseded — the current table maps IELTS 6.5 to PTE 55. Concordance is a comparison, not an acceptance guarantee.
Is the PTE overall score the average of my four skill scores?
No. Pearson calculates the official overall score from your performance on every scored item across the whole test — it is not a simple average of Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. A four-skill average (which this calculator shows) is a useful estimate that is usually within a few points of the real overall, but your score report is the only official number.
What PTE score do I need for Australia PR points?
For PTE Academic tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, DHA uses component-specific bands, not a flat score. Superior English (+20 points): Listening 69, Reading 70, Writing 85, Speaking 88. Proficient English (+10 points): Listening 58, Reading 59, Writing 69, Speaking 76. Competent English (0 points, the minimum to apply): Listening 47, Reading 48, Writing 51, Speaking 54. All four skills must clear a band in the same test.
How long is a PTE Academic score valid?
Pearson’s official position is that your score report is valid for two years from the test date. For Australian skilled migration, DHA accepts English test results for approximately three years — a separate, longer rule than Pearson’s own two-year report window. Individual universities and regulators (e.g. AHPRA, which accepts results up to two years old) set their own windows, so always check your specific pathway.
A few points short of 79? That gap is coachable.
