PTE Express explained

PTE Express: what it is — and why Nepali students usually need PTE Academic instead

PTE Express is a new, shorter Pearson test. It is useful — but only for one thing. Here is the honest version, so you don't pay for the wrong test.

Quick answer: is PTE Express the right test for me?

PTE Express is a 1-hour, US$70, online-at-home English test for admission to universities in the USA only. It is not accepted for Australia PR or visas, Canada immigration, or UK visas — for those you need PTE Academic (Australia & UK) or PTE Core (Canada PR). It uses the Global Scale of English, not the 10–90 scale, and is not yet available to sit from Nepal. For most Nepali students heading abroad, the right test is PTE Academic.

Taking the wrong PTE test is the most common — and most expensive — mistake. A PTE Express result will not be accepted by Australian, Canadian, or UK immigration. Match your goal to the right test before you book and pay.

The short version: if a visa or PR application is anywhere in your plan, PTE Express cannot help you — you need PTE Academic, or PTE Core for Canada PR. PTE Express only makes sense if your single goal is admission to a US university that accepts it.

Can Nepali students take PTE Express?

Not yet, in most cases. At launch, PTE Express was available in only a handful of countries — Brazil, Mexico, the USA, Japan, France, Italy, Germany, and Spain — and Pearson is adding markets through 2026. Nepal is not yet on the list.

And here is the honest part: the overwhelming majority of Nepali test-takers are heading toward migration or a visa — Australia PR, Canada PR, a UK or Australian student visa, AHPRA nursing, ACS. None of those accept PTE Express. So for almost every student we coach, the right test is PTE Academic (or PTE Core for Canada PR), regardless of whether Express is available.

If you are the genuine exception — applying to a university in the USA that accepts PTE Express, and able to sit it from where you are — go for it. Just confirm both facts on your university's admissions page and on pearson.com first.

PTE Express FAQs

Can I use PTE Express for Australia PR or a student visa?

No. PTE Express is built for admission to universities in the USA only. For Australia — PR points (subclass 189/190/491), student visas, AHPRA nursing, or ACS — you need PTE Academic. Pearson states this directly: anyone applying for migration or a visa in Australia, New Zealand, the UK, or Canada should take PTE Academic (and for Canada PR specifically, PTE Core).

Is PTE Express accepted for Canada immigration?

No. Canada economic immigration (Express Entry, the Canadian Experience Class, and Provincial Nominee Programs) uses PTE Core, which is approved by IRCC and reported in CLB levels. PTE Express is not a migration test. If your goal is Canada PR, see our PTE Core guide.

Does PTE Express work for a UK visa?

No. UK student and skilled visas require an approved Secure English Language Test (SELT). PTE Academic UKVI is an approved SELT; PTE Express is not. For UK study or work visas you need PTE Academic UKVI.

Can Nepali students take PTE Express right now?

Generally not yet. At launch PTE Express was available in only a handful of countries (Brazil, Mexico, the USA, Japan, France, Italy, Germany, and Spain), and Pearson is expanding to more markets through 2026 — Nepal is not yet on the list. Most Nepali test-takers are migration-bound anyway, which means PTE Academic or PTE Core, not Express. If you are specifically applying to a US university, confirm both that your university accepts PTE Express and that you can sit it from your location before you pay.

What score do I need for PTE Express?

There is no single fixed pass mark. PTE Express results are reported on the Global Scale of English (GSE), and each US university sets the GSE score it requires. Always check the specific score your target university asks for on its admissions page before booking.

PTE Express or PTE Academic for studying abroad?

It depends on the destination. For a university in the USA that accepts it, PTE Express is shorter and cheaper. For universities in Australia, the UK, Canada, or anywhere you also need a visa that asks for a Secure English Language Test, choose PTE Academic — and if your goal is Canada permanent residence, PTE Core. When in doubt, the safe choice for a Nepali student heading abroad is PTE Academic, because it is accepted the most widely.
