What is PTE Core?

PTE Core is Pearson's English proficiency test for Canadian immigration — accepted by IRCC for Express Entry, citizenship, and family sponsorship. It tests Speaking, Writing, Reading, and Listening in roughly two hours on a computer, and results are delivered in two business days.

PTE Core scores map to CLB (Canadian Language Benchmark) 1–10. For Canada PR, most applicants target CLB 9 across all four skills — that's where CRS language points peak for principal applicants.

Who should take PTE Core?

Canada PR applicants

IRCC accepts PTE Core for all Express Entry streams. Target CLB 9 across all four skills to maximise CRS language points.

Canadian citizenship applicants

PTE Core is accepted as proof of English proficiency for citizenship grants (CLB 4 minimum).

Family / spousal sponsorship

Sponsored spouses needing to prove English proficiency can use PTE Core instead of IELTS General.

Nurses + regulated professionals

Several Canadian regulators are starting to accept PTE Core for registration — always verify with your specific college or body.
