What is PTE Core?

PTE Core is Pearson's English proficiency test for Canadian immigration — accepted by IRCC for Express Entry, citizenship, and family sponsorship. It tests Speaking, Writing, Reading, and Listening in roughly two hours on a computer, and results are delivered in two business days.

PTE Core scores map to CLB (Canadian Language Benchmark) 1–10. For Canada PR, most applicants target CLB 9 across all four skills — that's where CRS language points peak for principal applicants.

FAQ

PTE Core — Frequently Asked

Is PTE Core accepted for Canada PR?+

Yes. IRCC accepts PTE Core for all economic Express Entry programs (FSW, CEC, FST) and for citizenship and sponsorship applications. For PR, target CLB 9 across all four skills to maximise CRS language points.

What PTE Core score equals CLB 9?+

CLB 9 on PTE Core requires Speaking 84–88, Listening 82–88, Reading 78–87, and Writing 88–89. These are the official IRCC ranges. See our full PTE Core → CLB conversion guide for all CLB levels.

Is PTE Core easier than PTE Academic?+

PTE Core is shorter and has no essay task, which some students find easier. But the CLB 9 bar for Canada PR is still demanding — Speaking and Writing need strong fluency and email structure.

Can I take PTE Core in Nepal?+

Yes. PTE Core is available at Pearson test centers in Kathmandu and Pokhara, subject to session availability. See our PTE Core test centers Nepal guide for booking steps.

How much does PTE Core coaching cost?+

PTE Core group batches start at Rs. 2,500 for 15 days. If you need private scheduling or a personalized review around your score report, ask about the separate 1-on-1 mentorship track during consultation.

Should I take PTE Core or IELTS General for Canada?+

If you're strong in spoken English, PTE Core usually scores higher because AI scoring doesn't mark you down for accent. IELTS suits writers who prefer handwritten essays. See our full PTE Core vs IELTS comparison.

Is 1 month enough for PTE Core?+

For most Nepali students with conversational English, one month of structured preparation is enough to hit CLB 7 across all skills. Reaching CLB 9 (the competitive Express Entry threshold) typically takes 4-6 weeks of focused practice on Speaking and Writing — the two skills that most often block CLB 9. Book a free score assessment to see whether one month is realistic for your specific CLB target. Verify exam booking availability on the official Pearson PTE website before finalising your prep schedule.

Is PTE harder than IELTS?+

PTE Core and IELTS General test similar everyday English skills but in different formats. Many Nepali students find PTE Core easier on Speaking because the AI does not penalise non-native accents (only intelligibility matters), and there is no human examiner. IELTS General suits students who prefer handwritten essays and a face-to-face Speaking interview. PTE Core results typically arrive within 2 business days versus IELTS General's longer turnaround. Choose based on which format fits your strengths.

How to book PTE Core exam from Nepal?+

Booking PTE Core from Nepal is done through Pearson's official myPTE portal. Steps: (1) create a myPTE account on the official Pearson PTE website, (2) verify your identity with your passport (the same passport must be presented on test day), (3) select PTE Core specifically (not PTE Academic), (4) choose your nearest test centre — typically Kathmandu or Pokhara, (5) select date and time, (6) pay the test fee. Verify the latest booking process and fees on the official Pearson PTE website before paying.
