PTE Core Nepal 2026: Everything You Need to Know

If you're a Nepali student or professional planning to immigrate to Canada, you've likely come across three letters that matter a great deal: PTE Core.

For broader context, see the PTE Core hub and the PTE score requirements guide.

Preparation Tip

Improve Your PTE Score

Nepali students often struggle with Oral Fluency. My 15-day batch focuses on the speaking and fluency criteria that PTE evaluates — with targeted practice and feedback.

Maybe your immigration consultant mentioned it. Maybe you searched "English test for Canada PR" and found it listed alongside IELTS. Either way, you have questions — and this guide answers all of them.

I'm Smriti Simkhada, Nepal's only 90/90 PTE perfect scorer and founder of PTE Nepal. I've coached 1,000+ Nepali students in PTE Academic and now PTE Core. This guide covers everything: what PTE Core is, how it works, what score you actually need, and how to prepare efficiently.

What is PTE Core?

PTE Core (Pearson Test of English — Core English) is a computer-based English language test designed specifically for Canadian immigration. It was developed by Pearson — the same company that makes PTE Academic — and is accepted by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) as proof of English language proficiency for permanent residency, economic immigration, and citizenship applications.

PTE Core is not the same as PTE Academic. They are two different tests from the same company, designed for different purposes:

  • PTE Academic: Used for university admissions, Australian immigration (skilled migration, student visas), and Canadian study permit/university applications
  • PTE Core: Used specifically for Canadian permanent residency, economic immigration, and citizenship — Express Entry, Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP), and other IRCC pathways

If your goal is Canada immigration (PR or citizenship), you need PTE Core — not PTE Academic. PTE Academic is not accepted by IRCC for permanent residency immigration purposes. This is one of the most common mistakes Nepali students make. Read the full comparison of PTE Core vs PTE Academic here.

Who Needs PTE Core?

You need PTE Core if you're applying to Canada through any of these pathways:

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) via Express Entry
  • Canadian Experience Class (CEC) via Express Entry
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)
  • Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP) that require an English test
  • Atlantic Immigration Program
  • Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot (RNIP)

PTE Core is also accepted for some Canadian work permit categories. Always confirm with your immigration consultant which test applies to your specific stream, or verify directly on the official IRCC website.

PTE Core Test Format (2026)

PTE Core tests all four language skills: Speaking, Writing, Reading, and Listening. The test is completed in approximately 2 hours on a computer at an authorized Pearson VUE test center. PTE Core has 19 question types and includes tasks specific to real-world, everyday English — not academic English. There is no human examiner for speaking or oral fluency tasks.

According to Pearson's official guide, approximate section timings are:

  • Speaking & Writing: 46–67 minutes
  • Reading: 27–38 minutes
  • Listening: 30–37 minutes

Note: PTE Core is scored mainly by Pearson's AI scoring system. Since the 2025 update, some response types may also be part-scored or reviewed by human experts, but pronunciation and oral fluency are not assessed by human examiners.

Part 1: Speaking & Writing (~46–67 minutes)

Task What You Do Skill Tested
Read AloudRead a short text into the microphoneSpeaking + Reading
Repeat SentenceListen to a sentence, then repeat itSpeaking + Listening
Describe ImageLook at a graph/chart, describe it in 40 secondsSpeaking

Summarize Written TextRead a passage, write a one-sentence summaryWriting + Reading
Write EmailWrite an email response to a given situation (Core-specific; 50-120 words within ~9 minutes)Writing

Important: PTE Core's writing tasks include Write Email (not a formal essay as in PTE Academic). The word count for Write Email is 50-120 words within approximately 9 minutes. Summarize Written Text requires a single-sentence summary (5-75 words). Always check the official Pearson PTE Core page for the complete task list.

Part 2: Reading (~27–38 minutes)

Task What You Do
Multiple Choice — Single AnswerRead a text, choose one correct answer
Multiple Choice — Multiple AnswersRead a text, choose all correct answers

Write from DictationListen to a sentence, type exactly what you hear

Key insight for Nepali students: The PTE Core task format shares similarities with PTE Academic, but PTE Core includes real-world, conversational English — not academic text. The primary difference in scoring is that PTE Core reports results as Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels, not the 10–90 point scale of PTE Academic. If your goal is Canada PR, make sure you are preparing specifically for PTE Core.

PTE Core CLB Score Requirements for Canada Immigration

Canada's immigration system uses Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) to measure English ability. Each PTE Core score maps to a CLB level — per skill. This means your Listening, Reading, Speaking, and Writing scores each map to a separate CLB level. Different immigration pathways require different CLB minimums in each skill. Always verify current score equivalencies at the official Pearson PTE Core website.

PTE Core Score to CLB Mapping (Per Skill — Approximate)

CLB Level Listening Reading Speaking Writing
CLB 1089-9088-9089-9090
CLB 982-8878-8784-8888-89
CLB 871-8169-7776-8379-87
CLB 760-7060-6868-7569-78
CLB 650-5951-5959-6760-68

Source: Pearson's published PTE Core to CLB equivalencies. Verify the current table at pearsonpte.com/pte-core. These ranges are reconciled to a single canonical table used across all three PTE Core articles on this site.

Note: CLB thresholds are per-skill — each of Listening, Reading, Speaking, and Writing must individually meet the required CLB level. A high score in one skill does not compensate for a low score in another. These are approximate ranges based on Pearson's published guidance. Always verify current score equivalencies at the official Pearson PTE Core website or with your immigration consultant before your test.

What CLB Level Do You Actually Need?

Immigration Stream Minimum CLB (per skill) Recommended CLB for Competitive Profile
Express Entry — Federal Skilled WorkerCLB 7 (all 4 skills)CLB 9+ (maximizes CRS language points)
Express Entry — Canadian Experience ClassCLB 7 (Speaking/Listening) / CLB 5 (Reading/Writing)CLB 9+
Federal Skilled Trades ProgramCLB 5 (Reading/Writing) / CLB 4 (Speaking/Listening)CLB 7+
Provincial Nominee Programs (varies by stream)CLB 5-9 depending on the stream and occupation — check the specific PNP pageCLB 7-9 for competitive streams

PNP CLB requirements vary by province and stream. Always check the specific PNP stream requirements on the provincial nominee program website before applying. Do not rely on general estimates for your specific stream.

Most Nepali students targeting Express Entry need CLB 9 in all four skills — this maximizes your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) language score and puts you in a competitive draw pool. See the detailed CLB score guide for Express Entry CRS points.

How PTE Core is Scored

PTE Core is scored mainly by Pearson's AI scoring system. Since the 2025 update, some response types may also be part-scored or reviewed by human experts before the final automated score is issued. However, pronunciation and oral fluency are not assessed by human examiners. This matters for Nepali students because:

  • The AI evaluates your responses against clear, consistent criteria — no examiner variability for most tasks
  • Your Nepali accent is not a disadvantage for oral fluency scoring — the AI assesses intelligibility and phonetic accuracy, not accent conformity
  • The scoring patterns can be studied and applied systematically

PTE Core results are typically available within 48 hours (2 business days) of your test, though Pearson notes some results may take up to 5 business days in some cases — much faster than IELTS (13 days for paper-based). Always confirm on the official Pearson PTE Core page.

How to Book PTE Core in Nepal

  1. Visit the official Pearson VUE website: home.pearsonvue.com/pte
  2. Create a Pearson account (separate from any PTE Academic account)
  3. Select "PTE Core" — make sure you do not accidentally book PTE Academic
  4. Choose a test center in Nepal — verify current PTE Core availability at home.pearsonvue.com/pte (test-centre availability changes; commonly available in Kathmandu, with additional centres added periodically)
  5. Select your preferred date and time
  6. Pay the test fee (check the current fee on the Pearson VUE booking platform — fees can change)

Important: PTE Core and PTE Academic are booked through the same Pearson VUE platform but are different tests. Double-check your booking confirmation says "PTE Core" before paying.

How to Prepare for PTE Core in Nepal

The good news for Nepali students preparing for PTE Core: the task format shares similarities with PTE Academic. If you have been preparing for — or have taken — PTE Academic, some skills transfer. However, PTE Core uses real-world conversational English (not academic text), so dedicated PTE Core preparation is important.

The key differences in preparation are:

  1. Know your CLB target per skill, not just your overall score goal. For PTE Core, you need to think in CLB terms — each skill maps separately to CLB levels. Meeting CLB 9 in three skills but CLB 7 in one skill does not satisfy a CLB 9 requirement.
  2. Understand the CLB-based scoring report. Your PTE Core score report will show CLB levels, not raw points.
  3. The AI-scoring patterns apply. PTE Core is scored mainly by the same type of AI engine. Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Write from Dictation, and Re-order Paragraphs all respond to the same algorithmic patterns — but practice with PTE Core-specific materials to reflect the real-world content style.

People Also Ask

Can we prepare PTE in 15 days?

Yes — 15 days of focused, criteria-aligned preparation can be enough for many Nepali students aiming for 65+ in each skill. Smriti Simkhada's group batch (Rs. 2,500) runs Monday-Friday at 7PM Nepal time and covers all PTE Academic task types in this format. Students targeting 79+ for Australia PR usually need a longer runway — typically 4-6 weeks — especially with a specific blocking skill. Book a free score assessment to find out if 15 days is realistic for your target.

Is 1 month enough for PTE?

For most Nepali students with conversational English, one month of structured preparation is enough to hit 65+ in each skill. Reaching 79+ for Superior English typically takes 5-8 weeks of focused practice on the blocking skill. The realistic timeline depends on your starting score, target, and the gap in enabling skills. Book a free score assessment to map your specific timeline before committing to an exam date. Verify exam booking availability on the official Pearson PTE website before finalising your schedule.

Is PTE harder than IELTS?

PTE and IELTS test similar English skills but in very different formats. Many Nepali students find PTE Academic easier on Speaking because the AI does not penalise non-native accents (only intelligibility matters), and PTE Reading and Listening are computer-based with no human examiner. IELTS may suit students who prefer handwritten essays and a face-to-face Speaking interview. PTE Academic results are typically delivered within 2 business days versus IELTS's 3-13 days.

How to book PTE exam from Nepal?

Booking PTE Academic from Nepal is done online through Pearson's official myPTE portal. Steps: (1) create a myPTE account on the official Pearson PTE website, (2) verify your identity using your passport (the same passport must be presented on test day), (3) choose your nearest test centre — typically Kathmandu, Pokhara, or Bharatpur, (4) select an available date and time, (5) pay the test fee via card. Verify the latest booking process and fees on the official Pearson PTE website before paying.
