How to Prepare for PTE Core: The Structured Nepal Student's Guide
Preparing for PTE Core is not the same as general English improvement. It's targeted test preparation — and with the right structure, most Nepali students can aim for CLB 9 in 4–6 weeks from a solid English foundation. Timelines will vary depending on your starting English level and daily study consistency.
For broader context, see the PTE Core hub and the PTE score requirements guide.
Improve Your PTE Score
Nepali students often struggle with Oral Fluency. My 15-day batch focuses on the speaking and fluency criteria that PTE evaluates — with targeted practice and feedback.
I'm Smriti Simkhada. I teach PTE Core using the same structured method I used to score 90/90 in PTE Academic. This 4-week plan reflects what has worked for students I've coached — but your results depend on your English ability, task performance, and official Pearson scoring criteria.
Important note on PTE Core vs PTE Academic for Canada: PTE Core is specifically designed for Canadian permanent residency, economic immigration, and citizenship pathways (Express Entry, PNP, etc.). PTE Academic is used for Canadian study permits and university admissions. If you are applying for Canadian PR or Express Entry, you need PTE Core — not PTE Academic. Source: pearsonpte.com/pte-core.
Before You Start: Know Your Target CLB Level
Before beginning preparation, confirm exactly what CLB level you need in each skill. CLB is reported per skill — you cannot compensate for a low score in one skill with a high score in another. For most Nepali students using Express Entry:
- CLB 7 in all skills: Minimum for Federal Skilled Worker — achievable in 2–3 weeks with focused prep from a solid English base
- CLB 9 in all skills: Recommended for competitive CRS — aim for 4–6 weeks of structured prep
Check your CLB requirement against the PTE Core CLB Score Guide before starting.
PTE Core Test Format Overview
PTE Core is a 2-hour computer-based test with 19 question types. The official Pearson section timings are:
- Speaking & Writing: 46–67 minutes
- Reading: 27–38 minutes
- Listening: 30–37 minutes
Key PTE Core Writing tasks include Summarize Written Text and Write Email (not a traditional essay). Speaking tasks include Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Describe Image, Re-tell Lecture, Answer Short Questions, and Respond to a Situation. Always check the official Pearson PTE Core guide for the complete and current task list.
Diagnostic Step: Take One Full PTE Core Mock Test First
Before any preparation, take a full PTE Core mock test under real conditions. This gives you a baseline score for each skill, clarity on your two weakest areas, and a realistic sense of the test format.
Use Pearson's official practice platform for your diagnostic. Identify your two weakest skills — these become your priority focus for Weeks 1 and 2.
Week 1: Format Mastery + High-Leverage Tasks (45–60 min/day)
| Day | Focus |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Read Aloud strategy — fluency, pacing, pronunciation patterns |
| Day 2 | Repeat Sentence — listen-first strategy, chunking technique |
| Day 3 | Write from Dictation — highest Listening score driver; practice daily from here |
| Day 4 | Re-order Paragraphs — logical connectors, topic sentence identification |
| Day 5 | Fill in the Blanks (Listening) — careful listening + spelling accuracy |
| Day 6 | Summarize Written Text — one-sentence structure, grammar precision |
| Day 7 | Mock practice session — any 3 task types; no pressure, just rhythm |
scoring system Tip — Read Aloud
The AI scores you on oral fluency (smooth delivery, no long pauses), pronunciation (accurate phonemes), and content (words read correctly). Practice with 3-second preparation before speaking — read the text silently once before the microphone activates.
scoring system Tip — Write from Dictation
This is the highest-scoring Listening task. Accuracy matters more than speed. Hear each word, type exactly what you hear. Correct spelling is essential.
Week 2: Writing Mastery + Listening Depth (60–75 min/day)
| Day | Focus |
|---|---|
| Day 8 | Write Email — structure (greeting, purpose, body, polite close), appropriate tone, task completion. Word range: 50-120 within ~9 minutes (PTE Core's key writing task) |
| Day 9 | Write Email (timed practice — 9 min cap) — aim for a complete, well-structured 50-120 word response within the time limit |
| Day 10 | Summarize Spoken Text — note-taking technique, paraphrase without copying |
| Day 11 | Highlight Incorrect Words + Select Missing Word — speed and focus drills |
| Day 12 | Describe Image — template structure, data description language |
| Day 13 | Write from Dictation (daily) + Review Week 1 weak areas |
| Day 14 | Full mock test (timed) — simulate real conditions |
scoring system Tip — Write Email
PTE Core's Write Email task is scored on: grammar range (variety of sentence structures), vocabulary range, spelling and punctuation, written discourse (logical flow), and form (appropriate format and length). For CLB 9 Writing, use a range of grammatical structures — not just simple sentences. Templates help structure your response, but rigid memorized templates without content flexibility can plateau at CLB 7–8.
Week 3: Speaking Excellence + Reading Speed (60–75 min/day)
| Day | Focus |
|---|---|
| Day 15 | Re-tell Lecture — note-taking while listening, structured retelling in 40 seconds |
| Day 16 | Answer Short Questions + Respond to a Situation — vocabulary practice + fast response drills |
| Day 17 | Reading Fill in the Blanks + R&W Fill in the Blanks — time allocation drills |
| Day 18 | Repeat Sentence (CLB 9 level) — longer sentences, accuracy focus |
| Day 19 | Timed Reading section practice (full section) |
| Day 20 | Write from Dictation (daily) + Write Email revision practice |
| Day 21 | Full mock test — review and analyze score report by skill |
scoring system Tip — Reading Time Management
Allocate no more than 2 minutes per Re-order item and 90 seconds per Fill in the Blanks item. Move on if you're stuck — time lost from over-deliberating costs you other questions.
Week 4: Mock Tests + Score Refinement (75–90 min/day)
| Day | Focus |
|---|---|
| Day 22 | Full mock test under real conditions (no interruptions, time it) |
| Day 23 | Review mock results — identify remaining CLB gap skills |
| Day 24 | Intensive practice on gap skill (3 hours focused on one skill) |
| Day 25 | Full mock test — track CLB per skill improvement |
| Day 26 | Speaking fluency drills — Read Aloud + Describe Image timed |
| Day 27 | Writing session — one full Write Email + one Summarize Written Text under time |
| Day 28 | Final light review. Rest. No heavy new content the day before your test. |
When to Book Your PTE Core Test
Book your test for approximately Day 25–28 — after your Week 4 mock tests confirm you've reached your target CLB level. Do not book before completing at least 2 full mock tests at consistent target-level performance.
PTE Core results are usually available within 2 business days, up to 5 business days in some cases (per Pearson). You do not need to book weeks in advance — prepare properly, then book close to when you need the result. This is one of PTE Core's biggest advantages over IELTS. For current test fees and seat availability, confirm in your Pearson account before payment, as fees and availability can change.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does PTE Core preparation take for a Nepali student?
As a general target: CLB 7 may be achievable in 2–3 weeks of focused preparation from a solid English base. CLB 9 typically requires 4–6 weeks of structured daily practice. If your English foundation needs work, add 2–4 weeks to either estimate. Individual results will vary.
Can I prepare for PTE Core while working full-time?
Yes. This plan requires 45–90 minutes per day. Mornings before work or evenings after work both work well. Daily consistency is more effective than weekend cramming.
Do I need coaching or can I self-study PTE Core?
Students with a strong English foundation (B2+ level) can aim for CLB 7–8 through self-study. For CLB 9, coaching that teaches specifically what the AI rewards can significantly improve consistency and reduce retake risk. Group batch coaching is available from Rs. 2,500 (fees subject to change — confirm at time of enrollment; check Pearson's official site for test fee information). The cost-to-value ratio is high compared to an extra retake.
