PTE Core Test Format: Everything You Need to Know Before Test Day

Walking into PTE Core without knowing the exact format is like sitting an exam without reading the syllabus. You can have strong English skills and still score below your target CLB if you're surprised by task types you haven't practiced.

This guide covers every task in PTE Core — what it asks you to do, how long you have, and what the AI scoring engine is actually measuring.

Preparation Tip

Improve Your PTE Score

Nepali students often struggle with Oral Fluency. My 15-day batch focuses on the speaking and fluency criteria that PTE evaluates — with targeted practice and feedback.

Official PTE Core section timings (from Pearson): Speaking & Writing 46–67 minutes, Reading 27–38 minutes, Listening 30–37 minutes. Always confirm current timings at pearsonpte.com/pte-core before your test.

Part 1: Speaking & Writing (~46–67 minutes)

Read Aloud

  • What you do: A text appears on screen. You have 30–40 seconds to prepare silently, then read the text aloud.
  • Skills measured: Speaking + Reading
  • AI scores: Oral fluency, pronunciation, content (words read correctly)
  • Key tip: Read silently first. Maintain consistent pace — long pauses lower your fluency score significantly.

Repeat Sentence

  • What you do: Listen to a sentence through your headset. Immediately repeat exactly what you heard.
  • Skills measured: Speaking + Listening
  • AI scores: Fluency, pronunciation, content (words reproduced correctly in correct order)
  • Key tip: Do not paraphrase. Train working memory to hold the sentence until you finish speaking.

Describe Image

  • What you do: A graph, chart, or image appears. You have 25 seconds to prepare, then 40 seconds to describe it aloud.
  • Skills measured: Speaking
  • Key tip: Use a consistent structure: introduce the image type → state key trend → compare data points → conclude. Fill the full 40 seconds.

Re-tell Lecture

  • What you do: Listen to an audio clip (60–90 seconds). Retell the main points in 40 seconds.
  • Skills measured: Speaking + Listening
  • Key tip: Take shorthand notes while listening. Retell structure: topic → key point 1 → key point 2 → conclusion.

Respond to a Situation

  • What you do: Listen to a practical scenario (e.g., missing a meeting, making a request). Respond appropriately in 40 seconds after 10 seconds of preparation.
  • Skills measured: Speaking
  • Key tip: Match tone to context — formal vs informal, apologetic vs assertive. Avoid over-formal or overly casual phrasing.

Answer Short Questions

  • What you do: Listen to a question. Answer with one or two words.
  • Skills measured: Speaking + Listening
  • Key tip: Answer is factual. One accurate word scores full marks.

Summarize Written Text

  • What you do: Read a passage (up to 300 words). Write a one-sentence summary (5–75 words) within 10 minutes.
  • Skills measured: Writing + Reading
  • Key tip: Write exactly one sentence. A complex structure works well: “Although [supporting point], the text argues that [main idea], suggesting [implication].”

Write Email

  • What you do: Respond to a prompt by writing a professional email (50–120 words) within 9 minutes. This is a PTE Core-specific task (not in PTE Academic).
  • Skills measured: Writing
  • AI scores: Content, tone, grammar, vocabulary, spelling, form (word count)
  • Key tip: Structure with greeting, purpose, body, and polite close. Match the tone to the scenario (formal or semi-formal).

Part 2: Reading (~27–38 minutes)

Multiple Choice — Single and Multiple Answers

Read a passage, select the correct answer(s). For Multiple Answers: negative marking applies — incorrect selections deduct points. Only select options you can justify from the text.

Re-order Paragraphs

Drag jumbled paragraphs into the correct logical order. Partial credit for correct adjacent pairs. Allocate no more than 2 minutes per item.

Reading Fill in the Blanks

Select the correct word from a dropdown list for each blank. Consider grammatical form and meaning.

Reading & Writing Fill in the Blanks

Type the correct word (no dropdown). Spelling accuracy is essential — a misspelled correct word scores 0.

Part 3: Listening (~30–37 minutes)

Write from Dictation

Highest-impact Listening task. Listen to a sentence, type exactly what you hear. Per Pearson WFD scoring: every correctly typed word in the correct sequence scores 1 point (toward both Listening and Writing). Wrong, missing, or extra words score 0 — Pearson does not publish that they actively deduct from the per-word total. WFD is partial-credit, not negative-marking (see the listening negative-marking article which correctly excludes WFD). Practice this daily.

Summarize Spoken Text

Listen to a lecture (60–90 seconds). Write a 50–70 word summary within 10 minutes. Paraphrase (do not copy) key points.

Highlight Incorrect Words

Read text on screen while audio plays. Click words in the text that differ from what you hear. Negative marking applies.

Fill in the Blanks (Listening) / Multiple Choice / Highlight Correct Summary / Select Missing Word

Follow-along and comprehension tasks. Spelling accuracy matters for Fill in the Blanks. For Multiple Answers, apply negative marking caution.

Test Day: What to Expect

  • Arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled time
  • Bring valid photo ID (passport recommended)
  • No personal belongings in the test room — locker provided
  • Noise-canceling headset and scratch paper provided
  • Results usually emailed within 48 hours, up to 5 business days in some cases (per Pearson)

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I go back to a previous task in PTE Core?

No. Once you complete a task and move on, you cannot return to it. Time management within each section is critical.

Is there negative marking in PTE Core?

Most tasks use partial scoring (correct items score, incorrect items score 0). However, Multiple Choice Multiple Answers (Reading and Listening) apply negative marking — incorrect selections deduct points.

How similar is PTE Core format to PTE Academic?

Very similar in structure, but PTE Core includes Core-specific tasks such as Write Email and Respond to a Situation. Both are scored by the same AI engine. See our full PTE Core vs PTE Academic comparison.
