7 PTE Core Mistakes Nepali Students Make — And How to Avoid Every One
I've coached over 1,000 Nepali students in PTE tests. The students who struggle — the ones who take 2 or 3 attempts before hitting their target — almost always share one or more of these seven mistakes.
For broader context, see the PTE Core hub and the PTE score requirements guide.
Improve Your PTE Score
Nepali students often struggle with Oral Fluency. My 15-day batch focuses on the speaking and fluency criteria that PTE evaluates — with targeted practice and feedback.
None of these mistakes are about lack of English ability. They're about strategy, preparation gaps, and misunderstanding how PTE Core actually works.
Mistake 1: Booking PTE Academic Instead of PTE Core
How common it is: Surprisingly frequent. Several students each year book PTE Academic when their consultant told them to take a PTE test for Canada.
The consequence: PTE Core is accepted by IRCC for Canadian permanent residency, economic immigration, and citizenship applications. PTE Academic is designed for study applications, including Canadian student visas and university admissions. Using the wrong test means your results cannot be used for your intended purpose. Fees and test availability vary by location; confirm current pricing in your myPTE account before payment.
How to avoid it: Before paying, confirm your booking confirmation explicitly says "PTE Core" if applying for Canadian PR/Express Entry. Ask your immigration consultant: "Is it PTE Core or PTE Academic that I need?"
Mistake 2: Preparing for "PTE" in General Without Knowing Your CLB Target
The consequence: You might score CLB 9 in three skills but CLB 7 in Writing. For competitive Express Entry, you need CLB 9 in all four skills to maximize CRS points. The 56-point difference between CLB 7 and CLB 9 (across all skills) can mean waiting 12+ months for an ITA.
How to avoid it: Before starting preparation, confirm your CLB requirement per skill from your immigration consultant. Take a diagnostic mock test and map your current performance to CLB levels.

Mistake 3: Treating PTE Core Like a General English Test
The real insight: PTE Core is scored by an AI scoring system. The AI rewards specific, learnable patterns. A student who understands these criteria and trains to meet them outscores a more naturally fluent student who doesn't.
How to avoid it: Learn what the AI rewards for each task type. Use structured preparation, not just general English practice. Review Pearson's official scoring criteria for each task.
Mistake 4: Ignoring Writing and Hoping for High Scores in Other Skills
Writing is the most commonly underperformed skill for Nepali students. PTE Core has no traditional essay task — its writing tasks are Write Email (Core-specific, 50-120 words within ~9 minutes) and Summarize Written Text (one sentence, 5-75 words within 10 minutes). Both are scored on grammar range, vocabulary range, written discourse, form, and spelling. Students who rely on memorized templates without understanding the scoring criteria often plateau at CLB 7-8 in Writing.
How to avoid it: Practice 2-3 Write Emails plus 2 Summarize Written Texts per week. Use feedback tools or coaching to assess your Writing quality. Learn the Write Email and SWT scoring criteria explicitly from Pearson's official PTE Core guide.
Mistake 5: Not Doing Full Mock Tests Before Booking
PTE Core is a 2-hour continuous test. Fatigue, time pressure, and task transitions affect performance in ways that never show up in task-level practice. Students who take their first full mock test on the actual test day often discover they run out of time in Reading.
How to avoid it: Take at least 2 full mock tests before booking your real test. Use Pearson's official practice platform. Only book when you consistently hit your target CLB in at least 2 consecutive mocks.
Mistake 6: Neglecting Write from Dictation and Repeat Sentence
Write from Dictation is one of the highest-scoring tasks in PTE Core's Listening section. Every word you transcribe correctly scores a point. Similarly, Repeat Sentence contributes to both Speaking and Listening scores. Students who under-practice these tasks consistently leave CLB points on the table.
How to avoid it: Practice Write from Dictation every single day during your preparation period. Focus on spelling accuracy. For Repeat Sentence, train your working memory with progressively longer sentences.
Mistake 7: Booking the Test Before You're Ready Because of Visa Deadlines
Each PTE Core attempt has associated fees that vary by location. Adequate preparation — typically 4–6 weeks for CLB 9 — costs far less than a retake. And critically: PTE Core results arrive in 48 hours. You do not need to book weeks in advance of a visa deadline. Use this advantage. Confirm current fees and seat availability in your myPTE account before payment.
How to avoid it: Map your immigration timeline realistically. Work backward: result in 48 hours → book test on [date] → preparation complete by [date]. Do not book until 2 full mocks show consistent target-CLB performance.
Quick Reference: Mistakes and Fixes
| Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|
| Booked PTE Academic for Canada | Always verify booking says "PTE Core" |
| No specific CLB target | Confirm CLB requirement per skill before starting |
| Treating it like general English practice | Learn what the AI rewards for each task type |
| Neglecting Writing | Practice 2-3 Write Emails + 2 SWTs per week; get feedback (PTE Core has no essay) |
| No full mock tests | Take 2+ full timed mocks before booking real test |
| Under-practicing Write from Dictation | Daily WfD practice from Day 1 of preparation |
| Booking too early due to visa anxiety | PTE Core results arrive in 48 hours — prepare properly, then book late |
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the most important task in PTE Core for improving Listening CLB?
Write from Dictation. It has the highest per-item score impact on Listening. Daily practice with accuracy focus — not speed — is the fastest way to improve your Listening CLB from 7 to 9.
How do I know if I'm ready to book PTE Core?
Take 2 full mock tests under real conditions. If both show consistent CLB at or above your target in all four skills, you're ready to book. If one skill is still below target, focus on that skill for another week before booking.
Stop Making These Mistakes. Start Targeting CLB 9.
Most PTE Core retakes are preventable. The right preparation strategy — structured, CLB-targeted, and built around full mock tests — gives you the best chance of a strong result on your first attempt.
