Quick answer

For a PTE Academic test taken on or after 7 August 2025, Home Affairs sets three English levels for the points-tested visas: Competent (L47 R48 W51 S54, 0 points), Proficient (L58 R59 W69 S76, 10 points) and Superior (L69 R70 W85 S88, 20 points). In IELTS the same levels are 6, 7 and 8 in each component. Every component has to reach the minimum. Tests taken before 7 August 2025 use the old flat 50 / 65 / 79.

Which rule applies to your test

  • Taken on or after 7 August 2025: the per-skill table above applies.
  • Taken before 7 August 2025: Home Affairs accepts the result at the old 50 / 65 / 79 minimums until 6 August 2028 inclusive for Competent, Proficient and Superior English. This depends on the visa, and the test still has to have been taken within the 3 years before you are invited to apply.
  • Functional English is the exception. Old-format results for Functional English could only be used until 6 August 2026 inclusive, and that window has now closed. For a test on or after 7 August 2025, Functional English is an overall PTE Academic score of 24.
  • Test centre only. At-home and remote-proctored tests are not accepted.
  • One score report. Each level is defined by the score achieved in a single language test (Migration Regulations 1994, regs 1.15C to 1.15EA), so all four component scores need to be on one PTE Academic result.

How English turns into points: 0, 10 or 20

The points test for subclasses 189, 190 and 491 has a pass mark of 65. English contributes 20 points for Superior (Schedule 6D item 6D21) and 10 points for Proficient (item 6D22). Competent English earns no points: it is the minimum level for these visas. Moving from Proficient to Superior is worth another 10 points, and the biggest steps are in Writing (69 to 85) and Speaking (76 to 88). See exactly what Superior needs on the Superior English PTE page, or put your whole profile into the points calculator.

Common questions

What PTE score is Superior English for Australia PR?

For a PTE Academic test taken on or after 7 August 2025, Superior English is at least Listening 69, Reading 70, Writing 85 and Speaking 88. It earns 20 points on the points test. The IELTS equivalent is 8 in each component.

What PTE score is Proficient English?

Proficient English is at least Listening 58, Reading 59, Writing 69 and Speaking 76 for a test taken on or after 7 August 2025. It earns 10 points. The IELTS equivalent is 7 in each component.

What PTE score is Competent English?

Competent English is at least Listening 47, Reading 48, Writing 51 and Speaking 54 for a test taken on or after 7 August 2025. It earns 0 points: it is the minimum English level for the points-tested skilled visas, not a points item. The IELTS equivalent is 6 in each component.

My PTE test was before 7 August 2025. Which scores apply?

Tests taken before 7 August 2025 are assessed at the old flat minimums: 50 in each component for Competent, 65 for Proficient and 79 for Superior. Home Affairs accepts those results until 6 August 2028 inclusive, depending on the visa, and the test must also have been taken within the 3 years before you are invited to apply.

Is PTE 79 still Superior English?

Only for a test taken before 7 August 2025. For a newer test, Superior needs Writing 85 and Speaking 88, so 79 in every skill matches Proficient English (10 points), not Superior.

Can I use PTE at home or another online test?

No. Home Affairs does not accept at-home or remote-proctored English tests. The test has to be taken at a test centre.

Can I combine my best scores from two PTE tests?

Not for Competent, Proficient or Superior English. The Migration Regulations define each level by the score achieved in a single language test (regs 1.15C, 1.15D and 1.15EA), so all four component scores need to be on one PTE Academic score report.

Stuck at Proficient? Superior is 10 more points.
