PTE Score Validity: Is it Valid for 2 Years or 3 Years?

"Is PTE valid for 2 years or 3 years?" Both numbers are real. They come from two different bodies and answer two different questions. Pearson decides how long it stands behind your score report. Each visa authority, regulator or university decides how old a result it will accept. This guide separates them, shows the rule for each Australian use, and walks through the dates that catch people out.

PTE Score Validity: The Two Rules

Pearson's rule: "Your Score Report is valid for two years from the date you took your test." That is the general validity of a PTE Academic result, and individual institutions may set shorter or longer windows.

Home Affairs' rule: for Australian visas, DHA asks for a test taken "in the 3 years before your visa application, depending on the visa subclass". That wording appears on each of its Competent, Proficient and Superior English pages. The 3 years is a ceiling, not a promise for every visa: some subclasses set a shorter window.

So "valid for 3 years" is correct for Australian skilled visas such as 189, 190 and 491, and "valid for 2 years" is correct for Pearson's report and for many other uses. Neither cancels the other.

The 485 row is the one most often missed. Graduates who sat PTE for university entry two years earlier often assume the score still works for the graduate visa. Under LIN 25/089 the test must be taken within 12 months before the day the 485 application is lodged.

Australian Skilled Visas: Which Date Counts?

For a 189, 190 or 491 visa, two dates matter: the day you are invited, and the day you lodge the visa application. The subclass 189 page says that at the time of invitation you must have at least competent English, and the English points in your EOI are assessed at invitation. The English pages then say the test must be from the 3 years before your visa application. After an invitation you have 60 days to apply, and that window cannot be extended.

Submitting an EOI does not stop the clock. An EOI can sit in SkillSelect for up to 2 years, and your test keeps ageing while it waits.

Worked timeline: a score close to its 3-year mark

Say you sat PTE Academic on 10 March 2024 and claimed English points from it. The test turns 3 years old on 10 March 2027.

• Invited on 15 December 2026: you have 60 days to apply, so you can lodge in January 2027, comfortably inside the 3 years.
• Invited on 1 March 2027: the 60-day window runs to the end of April, but your test reaches 3 years on 10 March. Lodge in the first days or the result may no longer count.
• Not invited before 10 March 2027: the score is too old to support the visa application, and you need a new test before you can claim those English points again.

If a result is within about six months of its 3-year mark and no invitation has arrived, plan a retake rather than hoping the next round arrives in time. A registered migration agent can check the exact dates for your subclass.

Tests taken before 7 August 2025

PTE Academic tests taken before 7 August 2025 are assessed under the earlier English rules, including the old "79 in each skill" for Superior English. DHA says such a result may still be valid for up to 3 years, depending on the visa subclass, so the last of those tests run out in August 2028. Tests on or after 7 August 2025 use the new per-skill bands: Proficient is Listening 58, Reading 59, Writing 69, Speaking 76, and Superior is Listening 69, Reading 70, Writing 85, Speaking 88. Should You Retake Before Your Score Expires?

Retake when your result will pass its window before the date that counts for your application, or when a retake could lift you a band. Work through it in order:

1. Find the date that counts for your use from the table: visa lodgement, invitation, AHPRA application or university offer.
2. Count forward from your test date. Will the result still be inside the window on that date, with room for delays?
3. If not, book a new test early enough to leave time for one more attempt.
4. If you are retaking anyway, aim higher. A Proficient result (10 points) replaced by a Superior one (20 points) adds 10 points to your EOI.

Common Mistakes With PTE Score Validity

• Calling 3 years a myth. It is DHA's rule for many Australian visas. What is wrong is applying it to everything.
• Assuming 3 years for the 485. The graduate visa needs a test from the 12 months before you lodge.
• Treating the EOI date as the safe date. The invitation and the visa application are the dates that matter.
