PTE Exemption Guide 2026: When You Don't Need PTE (And When You Actually Do) — For Nepali Students

Do Nepali Students Need to Take PTE? The Honest Answer.

If you're a Nepali student applying for Australia PR, Canada Express Entry, a UK visa, or university admission abroad, you have probably asked: "Can I skip PTE? Do I qualify for an exemption?"

For broader context, see the enroll in the next batch and the PTE score requirements guide.

Preparation Tip

Improve Your PTE Score

Nepali students often struggle with Oral Fluency. My 15-day batch focuses on the speaking and fluency criteria that PTE evaluates — with targeted practice and feedback.

Apply for Batch

The short answer: most Nepali students cannot skip an English test. Nepal is not an English-majority country for immigration purposes, and almost every major destination country requires you to prove English ability with a standardised test.

But there are specific, real exemptions that a meaningful minority of Nepali students do qualify for — and knowing whether you're one of them can save you significant time and money. Fees and test-center availability can change; confirm in your myPTE/Pearson account before payment.

This guide walks through each destination (Australia, Canada, UK, New Zealand, USA) and the exemption rules for 2026. I'm Smriti Simkhada, Nepal's 90/90 PTE perfect scorer and the instructor behind PTENepal. I'll keep this practical — if you're exempt, take the exemption. If you're not, let's figure that out clearly.

Australia — Do You Need PTE for PR or Student Visa?

Skilled Migration (189 / 190 / 491 visas)

English test almost always required. Department of Home Affairs requires one of PTE Academic, IELTS, TOEFL iBT, OET, or Cambridge C1 Advanced for every skilled migration stream. There is no blanket exemption for Nepali passport holders. Always confirm the latest requirements on the official DHA website before lodging your application.

Partial Passport Exemption (English-Speaking Country)

You are exempt from proving English ability if you hold a passport from the UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand, or the Republic of Ireland. Nepali passport holders are not on this list. Check the current exemption criteria on the official DHA website, as exemption policies can change.

PTE Academic Scoring: What You Should Know

PTE Academic is mainly scored by Pearson's AI scoring system. Since the 2025 update, some response types may also be part-scored or reviewed by human experts before the final automated score is issued. However, pronunciation and oral fluency are not assessed by human examiners. See Pearson's scoring overview for the latest details.

Updated English Score Thresholds for Australia (Post-7 August 2025)

For PTE Academic tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, the Department of Home Affairs updated skill-specific thresholds:

  • Competent English (required for Subclass 485, employer sponsorship, and some skilled migration): Listening 47, Reading 48, Writing 51, Speaking 54 — each skill scored separately.
  • Proficient English (post-7 Aug 2025): Listening 58, Reading 59, Writing 69, Speaking 76.
  • Superior English (post-7 Aug 2025): Listening 69, Reading 70, Writing 85, Speaking 88.

Tests taken on or before 6 August 2025 may be accepted under transition rules depending on the visa subclass and score validity. Always confirm the exact thresholds for your visa subclass on the official DHA English language requirements page.

Student Visa (Subclass 500)

Australian unis accept PTE Academic, IELTS, TOEFL iBT, OET, or Cambridge C1 Advanced. You may be exempt from submitting a test score if any of these apply:

  • You have completed 5 years of study in English in an approved English-majority country (UK, USA, Canada, NZ, Ireland, or SA).
  • You studied at an Australian university previously and received your degree in English.
  • Your chosen uni grants direct English exemption for specific Nepal feeder qualifications (rare, and depends on the uni).

Nepali +2 / Bachelor's programs taught in Nepal do not qualify as "5 years of study in English" for this exemption, even if the medium was English — Nepal is not on the approved country list.

However, many Australian universities will waive the test score requirement if your Bachelor's was fully English-medium from a recognised Nepali university AND you meet a minimum aggregate. This varies by institution. Check the specific uni directly — examples:

  • Federation University, CQU, La Trobe, Western Sydney, VIT — commonly grant Nepali Bachelor's medium-of-instruction waivers
  • Group of Eight unis (ANU, Melbourne, Sydney, UNSW etc.) — almost never grant waivers; PTE required

Graduate Visa (Subclass 485) & Employer Sponsorship

Competent English is required for these pathways. Under the post-7 August 2025 thresholds, that means Listening 47, Reading 48, Writing 51, Speaking 54 in PTE Academic. No exemption for Nepali passport holders. Always confirm the latest requirements on the official DHA website before lodging your application.

AHPRA (Nursing & Allied Health Registration)

AHPRA requires an English test score for Nepali-trained nurses and health professionals. PTE Academic is accepted. See our full AHPRA PTE requirements guide.

Canada — Do You Need PTE Core or IELTS for PR / Express Entry?

Scope reminder: PTE Academic and PTE Core are different tests with different rules. PTE Academic is accepted by Australia DHA, AHPRA, UK Home Office, INZ, and most universities. IRCC (Canada PR / Express Entry / PNP / AIP / citizenship) accepts PTE Core only — PTE Academic is not accepted by IRCC for permanent residency.

Express Entry (FSWP, CEC, FSTP) — 2026

An approved English test is mandatory for all three Express Entry streams. IRCC accepts IELTS General Training, CELPIP General, PTE Core and TEF Canada (French). There is no exemption for Nepali passport holders, regardless of how fluently you speak English or whether your Bachelor's was English-medium.

Important: For Canadian PR and Express Entry, the correct test is PTE Core — not PTE Academic. PTE Core is specifically designed for Canadian permanent residency, economic immigration, and citizenship applications. PTE Academic is used for study applications, including Canadian study permits and universities. Do not substitute one for the other. See our PTE Core complete guide.

Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP)

Same rule. An English test score is required. PTE Core is the appropriate test for PR and immigration pathways. No exemption for Nepal.

Student Visa (Study Permit)

Canadian universities and colleges set their own requirements. Most accept PTE Academic (not PTE Core — Academic is for study applications, Core is for immigration). Some schools grant English Medium of Instruction (MOI) waivers if your entire Bachelor's was English-medium — particularly for graduate programs. Check the school directly.

Note: IRCC ended the Student Direct Stream (SDS) on 8 November 2024. Study permit applications after that date are processed through the regular study-permit stream. There is no longer an SDS-specific test requirement — students apply under the standard process. See the official IRCC notice for details.

UK — Do You Need PTE for a Student Visa or Skilled Worker?

Student Visa (former Tier 4)

Required for most Nepali students, but with meaningful exemptions:

  • Exempt if you hold a UK degree (Bachelor's or higher).
  • Exempt if you're from a majority English-speaking country — Nepal is not on the list.
  • Exempt if your uni assesses you itself via interview or its own Secure English Language Test (SELT) equivalent — common at many UK universities for Nepali applicants with strong Bachelor's records.

If your uni's UCAS or direct offer letter says "no SELT required", you are exempt. If it asks for IELTS UKVI or PTE UKVI, you need the test. PTE Academic UKVI is accepted for most UK visa categories. Check the current exemption criteria on the official UK visa application page, as exemption policies change.

Skilled Worker Visa

English B1 required. PTE UKVI, IELTS UKVI, or a qualifying degree taught in English (including from some Nepali universities) can satisfy the requirement. Check the Home Office list. Always confirm the latest requirements on the official UK Home Office website before applying.

New Zealand — Do You Need PTE?

Skilled Migrant visa requires an approved English test (PTE Academic, IELTS General, TOEFL iBT, OET). Nepali passport holders are not exempt. Student visa rules mirror Australia broadly — uni discretion for MOI waivers. Check the current exemption criteria on the official Immigration New Zealand website, as exemption policies change. See our NZ PTE guide.

USA — Do You Need PTE?

The USA has no centralised immigration English test requirement (there is no "USA PR English test"). University admissions accept TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo English Test, and some now accept PTE Academic. Some US universities and colleges also accept PTE Express specifically for university admissions — however, PTE Express is not accepted for F-1 visas or any immigration pathway. Pearson positions PTE Express for US university/college study applications only; for visas, PR, and professional registration, use PTE Academic.

If your Bachelor's in Nepal was fully English-medium, many US universities waive the English test requirement — especially for graduate programs. Ask the admissions office directly. Always verify acceptance with your target institution, as policies vary by program and intake year.

Universities — When Can You Skip PTE for Admission?

Universities are where exemptions are most common. The typical paths:

Medium of Instruction (MOI) Waiver

If your previous degree was entirely in English, many unis waive the English test. Requirements:

  • Full degree (not just one module) taught in English
  • Institution writes a formal MOI letter on letterhead
  • Degree was completed within a specific window (often 2–5 years before application)

Nepali universities with strong English-medium Bachelor's programs (Kathmandu University, Pokhara University, IOE, specific TU colleges) often produce MOI letters that are accepted — but not universally. Check the current exemption criteria on the official university admissions website, as exemption policies change.

Minimum GPA Waiver

A few unis waive the test if your Bachelor's aggregate exceeds a threshold (e.g., 80% or GPA 3.5+). Rare but real.

Previous International Study

If you have completed prior study in an English-majority country, exemption is usually automatic.

When Is Chasing Exemption a Waste of Time?

Based on the WhatsApp questions I receive every week, here are the patterns that do not get exemption even though students hope they will:

  • "My +2 was in English, so I should be exempt." — No. +2 is not a full Bachelor's and rarely qualifies.
  • "I did a Nepali Bachelor's in English and got 75%." — MOI waiver is university-specific, not guaranteed, and does not apply at all for immigration (PR) streams.
  • "I've lived in Australia/UK/Canada for 3 years on a student visa." — This does not grant exemption for the immigration English requirement. You still need a test score for PR.
  • "I scored IELTS 7 in 2022." — Scores expire in 2 years for immigration and most unis. A 2022 IELTS is no longer valid for 2026 application.
  • "My employer will write a letter." — Employer letters don't count as English test proof for any major destination country.

If any of these are your reason for hoping for exemption, the honest path is: book PTE, prepare properly, pass once, and move on. It takes 15–30 days of preparation — less time and money than chasing exemption loopholes.

A Quick Checklist: Are You Actually Exempt?

Answer yes/no:

  1. Do you hold a passport from the UK, USA, Canada, NZ, Ireland, or SA? — If yes, you may be exempt from the immigration English test. If no, continue.
  2. Have you completed 5+ years of full-time study in an English-majority country? — If yes, exempt for most pathways.
  3. Are you applying only for university admission (not immigration) and does the uni offer MOI waivers? — Possibly exempt; ask the uni.
  4. Do you have a valid (≤2 years old) English test score from a previous application? — You may use it if still in window.

If all four are "no", you need to take PTE (or IELTS, or OET, depending on pathway). There is no shortcut.

Which Test Should You Take If You're Not Exempt?

For Nepali students in 2026, the test recommendation depends on your goal:

  • Australia PR or student visa?PTE Academic usually wins on speed and AI fairness
  • Canada Express Entry / PNP / PR?PTE Core is required for immigration; PTE Academic is for study/university admission
  • UK student visa? → PTE Academic UKVI or IELTS UKVI
  • University admissions? → PTE Academic (or Duolingo for some US schools)
  • AHPRA nursing? → PTE Academic — see detail

FAQ

Is there any way to get PTE exemption as a Nepali student in 2026?

For immigration (Australia PR, Canada Express Entry, NZ SMC), there is no exemption route for Nepali passport holders. For student visas and university admissions, MOI waivers are available at many (but not all) universities if your Bachelor's was English-medium. Exemption is the exception, not the rule.

I studied in English — do I still need PTE for Australia PR?

Yes. The Australian skilled migration program requires an English test score regardless of your medium of instruction. The only exemption is passport-based (UK, USA, Canada, NZ, Ireland) — Nepali passport holders always need a test.

Is medium-of-instruction letter enough for a Canada student visa?

Depends on the college. Many Canadian colleges and unis accept MOI letters from recognised Nepali universities for graduate admissions. For undergrad admissions, a test score is usually still required.

Can I use my old IELTS score instead of taking PTE?

If the IELTS score is within 2 years (for immigration) and meets the pathway's score requirements, yes. If it's expired or below threshold, you need a fresh test — PTE or IELTS.

Does 5 years of English-medium schooling in Nepal count for Australian student visa exemption?

No. Nepal is not on the approved English-speaking countries list for the 5-year education exemption. The exemption applies only if the 5 years were in UK, USA, Canada, NZ, Ireland or SA.

I'm a Nepali already living in Australia on a student visa. Do I need PTE for PR?

Yes. Prior time in Australia on a student visa does not grant English exemption for the subsequent PR application. You will need PTE Academic (or equivalent) at the PR stage, meeting the required skill-specific thresholds.
