PTE Score for New Zealand Residence and Student Visas: Nepal Guide 2026

Most of the advice circulating about the PTE score for New Zealand is out of date. I still get messages from students in Kathmandu and Bharatpur quoting a target of 50 overall, or asking whether 65 will earn them extra points in the Skilled Migrant Category. Both ideas come from a version of the New Zealand system that no longer exists.

This guide sets out what Immigration New Zealand asks for right now, what shifts on 24 August 2026, and where the old numbers came from so you can recognise them when someone repeats them to you.

One thing to say plainly at the start. New Zealand uses PTE Academic, not PTE Core. PTE Core is the Pearson test built for Canada's economic immigration route, meaning Express Entry, the Post-Graduation Work Permit and provincial nominee programs. It does not appear on the list of tests Immigration New Zealand accepts for skilled residence. If a consultancy tells you to sit PTE Core for a New Zealand resident visa, they have confused the two products.

The Score New Zealand Actually Asks For

For the Skilled Migrant Category and the other skilled residence visas, Immigration New Zealand publishes a single overall PTE Academic requirement. There are no per-skill minimums attached to it.

Those IELTS figures are not conversions. INZ publishes a separate requirement for each accepted test, and they do not line up with Pearson's own concordance, which puts IELTS 6.5 nearer PTE 55. Read the row for the test you are actually sitting.

Three details around that number decide more applications than the number itself.

Your result must be under two years old on the day you apply. Not the day you sat the test, and not the day your job offer was signed. I have watched a student pass comfortably, spend fourteen months gathering employment evidence, then find the result had aged out mid-process. If your residence timeline is long, sit the test late rather than early. We cover the mechanics of this in how long a PTE score stays valid.

At-home tests are not accepted. INZ states that tests taken remotely, outside a test centre, are not acceptable. You need to sit PTE Academic at a Pearson VUE centre. From Nepal that means booking a centre slot in the normal way, which we list in the PTE test centres in Nepal.

Partners have a second route. A non-principal applicant who cannot reach 36 may pre-purchase ESOL tuition in New Zealand instead of sitting a test. That option does not exist for the principal applicant, so if English is the weaker part of your household profile, it is worth deciding early which of you leads the application.

What Changes on 24 August 2026

Immigration New Zealand is making a set of changes to the Skilled Migrant Category that take effect on 24 August 2026. For anyone planning around an English test, one of them matters.

English test results will be valid for five years instead of two if you hold an eligible occupational registration. That is the whole condition. A registered nurse, a registered teacher, an engineer with the right registration, and now accountants who hold Certified Practising Accountants Australia membership and can do the work of a Qualified Statutory Accountant in New Zealand all fall into this group.

One trap here that INZ will not warn you about. Pearson expires your ability to send a result two years after the test date. An immigration rule that accepts an older result does not extend Pearson's window, so if INZ lets you rely on a four-year-old score you may still be unable to assign or verify it through Pearson. Send your result to the recipient you need while it is inside the two years.

I want to flag something here, because I nearly got it wrong myself while preparing this article. Several summaries of this change, including automated ones, add extra conditions to the five-year rule. They say you also need four years of relevant experience, or eighteen months in New Zealand at the median wage. Those conditions are real, but they belong to a different part of the system, the new Skilled Work Experience pathway. They are not conditions on English test validity. If someone tells you your five-year validity depends on your work history, check the INZ page yourself.

The other changes taking effect the same day:

• Two new pathways join the SMC: Skilled Work Experience and Trades and Technician.
• Median wage settings are simplified. You need to meet the wage threshold in effect when you start gaining skilled work experience and hold at least that rate when you apply, rather than clearing a higher bar later.
• A grace period applies where skilled work begins within five months of the work visa being granted.

No PTE or IELTS score threshold changes on 24 August 2026. The overall 58 stands. What changes is how long your result lasts and which pathways you can use it for.

The Student Visa Number INZ Never Published

This section is going to be shorter than you expect, and that is the honest answer.

Immigration New Zealand does not publish a PTE Academic threshold for student visas the way it does for skilled residence. There is no official INZ table saying bachelor's degrees need 50 and postgraduate courses need 58. For most student visa applicants, an English test result is not even a mandatory part of the application.

What sets your target is the education provider. Auckland, Otago, Victoria University of Wellington and AUT each publish their own English requirements, and those vary by faculty and by programme. A nursing programme and a business programme at the same university can ask for different scores.

So work backwards. Find your programme, read its admission page on the university's own website, and set your PTE target from there. Do not take a target from a blog table, including this one. Any article quoting a single number for a New Zealand student visa is guessing, and if that guess is low you will book a test, pass it, and still be rejected by the university.

Why the Old 50 / 65 / 79 Advice Still Circulates

For years New Zealand ran a points-based Skilled Migrant Category. English sat inside that points calculation. Competent English at around 50 got you over the line, 65 was described as proficient and earned more points, and 79 was treated as the top band. That is where the advice to target 65 for the points advantage comes from.

That system is gone. The current Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa does not award additional points for English above the entry threshold. You either meet the overall 58 or you do not. Scoring 79 gives you no residence advantage over scoring 58.

I am not saying aim for exactly 58 and stop. A student who trains to 65 has margin, and margin matters when a single Speaking task goes badly on test day. But there is a real difference between building a buffer and chasing points that no longer exist. If you are retaking a fourth time to move from 65 to 79 for a New Zealand resident visa, you are spending another USD 248.60 and several weeks for nothing.

Common Mistakes Nepali Applicants Make

• Sitting PTE Core. It is built for Canada's economic immigration streams. New Zealand takes PTE Academic. This is the most expensive mistake on the list because the entire fee is wasted.
• Chasing per-skill minimums that are not there. Australia's skilled-migration English points test sets per-skill bands, where Competent, Proficient and Superior each need their own Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking minimum. New Zealand's skilled residence rule is a single overall score with no per-skill minimums. Students train to protect a Writing sub-score that INZ is not going to look at. Writing still feeds your overall, you just do not need a separate Writing minimum.
• Testing too early. The two-year clock runs to your application date. Sitting the test the month you start thinking about migration often wastes the result.
• Assuming a university requirement equals a visa requirement. They are separate. Meeting one does not satisfy the other.
• Assuming a remote sitting will do. Any at-home or remote version is not accepted for this. It has to be a test centre.

A Practice Method to Move From the Low 50s to 58

Most Nepali students who land at 50 to 54 are not failing across the board. They are usually losing the same points in the same places. This is the sequence I use in one-on-one sessions.

1. Get a task-level breakdown, not just an overall. An overall of 52 tells you nothing actionable. Note that the score report itself will not hand you this. Since the August 2025 refresh it shows your overall, the four communicative skills and a Skills Profile, and no longer prints an Oral Fluency number. A scored mock is where the task-level detail comes from.
2. Fix pronunciation of the sounds Nepali does not contrast. The one I hear most is v and b, so very reads as bery to the scoring engine. Drill minimal pairs for ten minutes a day. It moves oral fluency faster than anything else at this level.
3. Treat Write from Dictation as free marks. It feeds both Listening and Writing. Every sentence you get fully correct pays twice.
4. Time Read Aloud before you record. Students rush the first line, stumble, restart, and lose fluency marks that were never about their English.
5. Sit one scored mock under real conditions before rebooking. A scored mock, not a free online quiz. It is the closest read you can get on whether you are actually at 58 before you pay for another attempt.

Tips for Nepali Students Targeting New Zealand

PTE Academic in Nepal is USD 248.60 (Pearson's listed Nepal price), charged in dollars, so the rupee amount depends on your bank's rate. IELTS is priced in rupees: NPR 33,000 for computer-delivered IELTS per IDP Nepal. Compare the two on the day you book, then pick the format that suits you.

For most of my Nepali students, PTE suits them better for one reason: no human examiner sitting across the table. Students who freeze in an IELTS speaking interview often do noticeably better speaking to a microphone. If you are the opposite, and you find a screen colder than a person, that is a genuine reason to consider IELTS instead.

On accent: the scoring engine is trained on a wide range of English accents and a Nepali accent is not penalised. What it does penalise is unclear word stress and long hesitations. Those are trainable.

If you are already in Australia or the Gulf and looking at New Zealand, the practical constraint is usually time zones rather than English. I run sessions across Sydney, Melbourne, Doha and Dubai hours, so preparation does not have to compete with your shift.
