PTE Score for New Zealand Visa and PR: Nepal Guide 2026

Important — verify with INZ before relying on the numbers below: Immigration New Zealand overhauled the Skilled Migrant Category in late 2023 to a 6-points Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa system. Under the current rules, PTE Academic is required at the entry threshold but additional points are no longer awarded for higher English bands above that threshold. The thresholds and points-based English tiers described below reflect the legacy framing and may no longer apply. Confirm current requirements at immigration.govt.nz.

Australia and Canada get most of the attention among Nepali students planning to migrate. But New Zealand is a rapidly growing destination — with strong demand for skilled workers, a streamlined immigration system, and a high quality of life that appeals strongly to Nepali families.

Preparation Tip

Improve Your PTE Score

Nepali students often struggle with Oral Fluency. My 15-day batch focuses on the speaking and fluency criteria that PTE evaluates — with targeted practice and feedback.

I'm Smriti Simkhada, PTE Academic's 90/90 scorer and founder of PTE Nepal. These strategies reflect what has worked for students I've coached — but your score depends on your own English ability, task performance, and official Pearson scoring criteria. This guide covers every New Zealand visa pathway that accepts PTE Academic, the key score thresholds, and how to prepare from Nepal.

Note on PTE Academic scoring: PTE Academic is mainly scored by Pearson's AI scoring system. Since the 2025 update, some response types may also be part-scored or reviewed by human experts before the final automated score is issued, but pronunciation and oral fluency are not assessed by human examiners. NZ INZ values change frequently. The current Skilled Migrant Category, Accredited Employer Work Visa, and student visa English minimums (and accepted tests) are listed on the official Immigration New Zealand site. Always verify the latest requirement on the Immigration New Zealand website before booking your test or applying — the figures in this article may not reflect the most recent INZ update.

Is PTE Academic Accepted for New Zealand Visas?

Yes. PTE Academic is accepted by Immigration New Zealand (INZ) as a recognized English language test for most visa categories. New Zealand is one of the first countries to have recognized PTE Academic — it has a longer acceptance history with PTE than Canada does.

Important: For Canadian immigration (Express Entry, PNP, permanent residency), PTE Core is the relevant Pearson test — not PTE Academic. PTE Academic is used for study applications and university admissions. This guide covers New Zealand pathways only, which accept PTE Academic. Always confirm current New Zealand immigration English requirements on Immigration New Zealand's official website (immigration.govt.nz) before applying.

PTE Score Requirements for New Zealand Visas (2026)

New Zealand Student Visa

Study LevelMinimum PTE OverallNotes
Bachelor's degree and above50+ overall, no skill below 42Many universities require higher — check with your institution
Diploma / Certificate (lower)42+ overallPathway courses for students not meeting university entry directly
University of Auckland58–64+ (varies by faculty)Check specific course requirements
University of Otago55–65+ (varies by course)
Victoria University of Wellington58+ overall
AUT (Auckland University of Technology)50–58+ (varies)

University-specific score requirements can change. Always confirm directly with your institution and check INZ requirements at immigration.govt.nz before applying.

New Zealand Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) — PR Pathway

RequirementPTE ScoreNotes
Skilled Migrant Category (legacy framing — verify with INZ)50+ overall, no skill below 42 (legacy threshold)English proficiency requirement for SMC application
Competent English (standard PR)50 overall, no skill below 42Satisfies the "competent English" threshold
Proficient English (legacy — extra points removed)65+ overall, no skill below 58Under the current Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa (post-2023 reform), additional points are no longer awarded for English bands above the entry threshold. Verify at immigration.govt.nz.
Expert/Superior (legacy framing — no extra points under current SMC)79+ overallMaximum English proficiency points; equivalent to IELTS 7.0+

Key insight for PR applicants: Unlike Australia's skilled migration (where 79 unlocks a specific threshold), NZ's SMC awards English proficiency as part of a points score. Scoring 65+ vs. 50 can mean the difference between a selection and waiting months for the next pool. Targeting 65–79 is the strategic sweet spot for most Nepali SMC applicants.

Always confirm current SMC English requirements on immigration.govt.nz before applying, as thresholds may change.

Green List and Straight to Residence

New Zealand's Green List includes occupations that are in critical shortage — many construction, engineering, healthcare, and trade roles qualify. For Green List occupations, the immigration process is faster and may have a direct residence pathway.

RoutePTE Requirement
Tier 1 (Straight to Residence)50+ overall, no skill below 42
Tier 2 (Work to Residence)50+ overall, no skill below 42

Post-Study Work Visa (Open Work Visa)

After completing a New Zealand qualification at level 7 or above, graduates can apply for an open work visa. English language requirement for the visa itself is typically met by your study completion — but you'll need PTE for your original student visa application.

Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV)

Standard AEWV (job in NZ)Not typically required if role doesn't specify; check with employer and INZ

  • Student visa + top NZ university: 58–65 overall

How to Prepare for PTE from Nepal Targeting New Zealand

The preparation is identical to Australia or UK preparation — the same PTE Academic test is used for all destinations. The only difference is which score threshold you're aiming for.

For most NZ pathways, the 65+ target is achievable in 4–5 weeks with structured coaching for students with upper-intermediate English. This is lower than the 79+ needed for Australia PR, making NZ a realistic target for students who find the Australian threshold challenging. These preparation timelines are estimates based on students with a solid English foundation — individual results will vary.

PTE Academic results are usually available within 2 business days, up to 5 business days in some cases — particularly useful for tight NZ immigration timelines. For current test fees and seat availability, confirm in your myPTE/Pearson account before payment, as fees and availability can change.

What Students Say About This Preparation

"Following the strategy Smriti Didi outlined, my Oral Fluency improved enough to push Speaking above 79 in my next attempt." — Rahul T., Kathmandu

"The structured approach made the difference. I had been retaking without a plan — one focused batch changed that." — Anita S., Pokhara

Results reflect individual student preparation experience. Scores depend on personal effort, starting ability, and test conditions. No specific outcome is strongly likely.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is PTE accepted for New Zealand skilled migrant category?

Yes. PTE Academic is accepted by Immigration New Zealand for the Skilled Migrant Category points assessment. A score of 50+ meets the "competent English" threshold, while 65+ earns "proficient English" points — giving your SMC application a meaningful advantage. Confirm current INZ requirements at immigration.govt.nz.

Do I need IELTS or can I use PTE for New Zealand?

You can use PTE Academic for most New Zealand visa categories. PTE is accepted by INZ as a recognized English language test. PTE Academic results are usually available within 2 business days, up to 5 business days in some cases — particularly useful for tight NZ immigration timelines.

What is the minimum PTE score for New Zealand student visa?

The minimum PTE score for a NZ student visa is typically 50 overall with no communicative skill below 42. However, most reputable universities require 55–65+. Always check the specific score requirement for your institution and course, and confirm current INZ requirements at immigration.govt.nz.

Is New Zealand a good option for Nepali students who can't reach PTE 79?

PTE Academic scores are valid for 2 years from the test date. For New Zealand immigration, ensure your score is still valid at the time of your visa application — not just at the time of the test.

2025 English-band changes — important context

From 7 August 2025, DOHA changed how it interprets PTE Academic results. The English bands (Functional, Vocational, Competent, Proficient, Superior) are now applied per skill (Listening / Reading / Writing / Speaking) rather than to a single overall score. Articles or coaches still using "PTE 50 overall" for Competent or "PTE 65 overall" for Proficient are referencing the older rule. For tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, every component must meet the per-skill minimum. Always check the latest DOHA English language page before assuming a score level.

Last fact-checked on 2026-05-08 against official sources (Pearson PTE, Australia Department of Home Affairs, AHPRA, IRCC, GOV.UK, INZ). Test fees, score requirements, and visa rules can change at any time — always verify the latest details on the relevant official website before booking or applying.

About PTE Express: the product Pearson markets is now the Pearson English Express Test (launched Q4 2025; one-hour online test scored on the Global Scale of English; for university admissions only, not for visa use). Verify the latest status on the official Pearson site before relying on it.
