PTE Summarize Group Discussion: Secret Template & Strategy

Smriti Simkhada
90/90 Perfect Scorer
Summarize Group Discussion is a task introduced as part of Pearson's August 2024 PTE Academic update that contributes to your Listening and Speaking scores. You listen to a 60-90 second multi-speaker audio, then deliver an approximately 40-second spoken summary after a short preparation window. Verify the latest spec on pearsonpte.com/pte-academic.
For broader context, see the PTE Academic preparation hub and the PTE score requirements guide.
Improve Your PTE Score
Nepali students often struggle with Oral Fluency. My 15-day batch focuses on the speaking and fluency criteria that PTE evaluates — with targeted practice and feedback.
Note-Taking Strategy
Do not try to write exact sentences. Focus on capturing the main points and differing viewpoints. Divide your notepad by speaker (typically 3-4 voices, though the exact number varies per test version).
The 79 Plus Speaking Template
To avoid sounding like a memorised script (which Pearson's automated scoring detects), use this natural framing: The discussion primarily focused on... The first speaker argued that point one. However, another participant pointed out that point two. Ultimately, the group seemed to agree that consensus.
In our coaching, we find a 50 to 70 word equivalent summary fits comfortably inside Pearson's published response window. Maintain a neutral, objective tone.
