What is the minimum PTE Academic score for Australian university admission for Nepali students?+
Minimums vary by university and programme. Most undergraduate programmes accept PTE Overall 50–58 with no skill below 42–50. Master programmes typically require PTE Overall 58–65 with no skill below 50–58. Group of 8 universities (Melbourne, Sydney, ANU, Monash, UQ, UWA, Adelaide, UNSW) usually require 64+. Health programmes (Nursing, Medicine, Pharmacy) and Law require higher Speaking and Writing — typically 65+ to 79+. Always confirm against the specific university programme page; admission floors shift annually.
Is PTE Academic accepted by all Group of 8 Australian universities?+
Yes. All eight Group of 8 universities (Melbourne, Sydney, ANU, Monash, UQ, UWA, Adelaide, UNSW) accept PTE Academic for direct entry. PTE is also accepted by all 23 ATN, IRU, and other major Australian universities. Pearson maintains an updated list of recognising institutions on the Pearson PTE website.
How does PTE compare to IELTS for Australian university admission for Nepali applicants?+
PTE Overall 58 ≈ IELTS 6.5 overall; PTE Overall 65 ≈ IELTS 7.0; PTE Overall 79 ≈ IELTS 8.0. PTE Academic results are typically available in 24–48 hours versus 5–7 days for IELTS. PTE Speaking is AI-graded (consistent but punishes Nepali-English prosody more than human IELTS examiners do); PTE Writing uses a 7-trait rubric. For Nepali students, PTE is increasingly the preferred test in Kathmandu and Pokhara test centres because of result speed and computer-based delivery.
Do I need PTE Academic or PTE Core for Australian university admission?+
PTE Academic — always. PTE Core is the Canada-PR test and is not accepted by Australian universities for admission. Australian universities also do not accept PTE General. Confirm "PTE Academic" specifically on your university's English requirements page.
Can I use PTE Academic for both university admission and the student visa (subclass 500)?+
Yes. PTE Academic results are accepted both by Australian universities for academic admission and by the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) for the Subclass 500 student visa. Most Nepali students take PTE once and use the same score report for both. The DHA visa English minimum is generally lower than university admission minimums, so meeting the university bar usually clears the visa requirement automatically.
What if my PTE score is just below the university's minimum?+
Most universities accept conditional offers with English-language pathway programmes (foundation programmes, ELICOS English courses, or pathway programmes) that bridge the gap. Alternatively, retake PTE once with a focused 4–6 week 1-on-1 plan — most candidates clear a one-band gap on the next attempt. Conditional offers are workable but extend your study timeline by 3–6 months and add fees; retake is usually faster.
How long from PTE 50 plateau to 65+ for Group of 8 admission?+
Most Nepali students who reach 65 from a 50 plateau do so in 8–12 weeks of focused 1-on-1 work, given 5–7 hours of weekly practice. The plateau is usually a combination of Speaking sub-skill (Oral Fluency or Pronunciation) and Writing Discourse trait. Score-report diagnosis on session one decides the plan.
