Important: These thresholds apply to PTE Academic tests taken on or after 7 August 2025. Tests taken before this date follow the older uniform thresholds (65 each for Proficient, 50 each for Competent) and may still be accepted under transition rules depending on your visa subclass. The key number for most Nepali students is 79+. Scoring 79 or above in all four components (Speaking, Writing, Reading, Listening) unlocks 20 immigration points — 10 more than the standard Proficient level. In a competitive EOI pool where the cutoff for 189 visa invitations can be 85-90 points, that 10-point difference is enormous.
Important — PTE Core is NOT accepted in Australia. For Australian skilled migration, only PTE Academic counts. PTE Core is the IRCC-accepted version for Canada. Confirm on the official DOHA English language page.
Score Requirements by Visa Subclass
Subclass 189 — Skilled Independent Visa
No state sponsorship needed. Most competitive. Cutoff scores in 2025-26 have been 85-95 points depending on occupation. You almost certainly need 20 English points (PTE 79+) to be competitive. Check the Subclass 189 requirements before applying.
Subclass 190 — Skilled Nominated Visa
Requires nomination from a state or territory. Each state has its own English requirements, but most require at minimum Proficient English. To receive an invitation, PTE 79+ is strongly recommended as states prioritise higher-scoring candidates. Review Subclass 190 details and your state's specific nomination criteria.
Subclass 491 — Skilled Work Regional (Provisional)
Nominated by a state/territory or sponsored by a family member in a regional area. The minimum is Competent English, but competition still favours higher scores. Subclass 500 — Student Visa
For studying in Australia first. Minimum PTE score is typically 42-50 overall depending on the institution and course. However, if you plan to transition to PR after your studies, aiming for Proficient level from the start saves you from re-taking the test. What 79+ Actually Means: All Four Bands
A common misunderstanding: you do not need 79 as an overall average. You need 79 in each of the four communicative skills bands separately — Speaking, Writing, Reading, and Listening. A student who scores 85 overall but has 72 in Writing does not qualify for Superior English.

From 7 August 2025, DOHA changed how it interprets PTE Academic results. The English bands (Functional, Vocational, Competent, Proficient, Superior) are now applied per skill (Listening / Reading / Writing / Speaking) rather than to a single overall score. Articles or coaches still using "PTE 50 overall" for Competent or "PTE 65 overall" for Proficient are referencing the older rule.
