90/90 Perfect Scorer

If you're a Nepali student or professional planning to move to Australia, your PTE Academic score is not just an English test result — it is a direct input into your immigration points score. Getting the right score the first time could be the difference between an invitation to apply for a PR visa and waiting another two years.

This guide breaks down exactly what score you need, what it means for your points, and how to get there from Nepal.

Preparation Tip

Improve Your PTE Score

Nepali students often struggle with Oral Fluency. My 15-day batch focuses on the speaking and fluency criteria that PTE evaluates — with targeted practice and feedback.

Why PTE Academic for Australia PR from Nepal?

Australia accepts four English tests for immigration: IELTS, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, and Cambridge C1 Advanced. For Nepali students, PTE Academic has clear advantages:

  • Results in 48 hours — not 13 days like IELTS
  • AI-scored — no examiner bias, consistent evaluation
  • Multiple test dates per month across Nepal — check current availability and fees at Pearson's official booking site
  • One test = both student visa and PR requirement

How PTE Scores Convert to Australian Immigration Points

Under Australia's points-based General Skilled Migration (GSM) system, your English proficiency contributes directly to your Expression of Interest (EOI) score. Here is exactly how PTE scores map to points:

PTE Score (for tests on/after 7 Aug 2025) English Level Immigration Points Meets Requirement For
L69/R70/W85/S88 (post-7-Aug-2025) Superior English 20 points All skilled visas, maximum points
Listening 58, Reading 59, Writing 69, Speaking 76 Proficient English 10 points All skilled visas, standard points
Listening 47, Reading 48, Writing 51, Speaking 54 Competent English 0 points Minimum threshold (no extra points)
Below Competent thresholds in any band Below competent Ineligible Does not meet minimum requirement

Important: These thresholds apply to PTE Academic tests taken on or after 7 August 2025. Tests taken before this date follow the older uniform thresholds (65 each for Proficient, 50 each for Competent) and may still be accepted under transition rules depending on your visa subclass. Always verify your specific requirements at the Department of Home Affairs English language page before booking or lodging your application.

The key number for most Nepali students is 79+. Scoring 79 or above in all four components (Speaking, Writing, Reading, Listening) unlocks 20 immigration points — 10 more than the standard Proficient level. In a competitive EOI pool where the cutoff for 189 visa invitations can be 85-90 points, that 10-point difference is enormous.

Important — PTE Core is NOT accepted in Australia. For Australian skilled migration, only PTE Academic counts. PTE Core is the IRCC-accepted version for Canada. Confirm on the official DOHA English language page.

Score Requirements by Visa Subclass

Subclass 189 — Skilled Independent Visa

No state sponsorship needed. Most competitive. Cutoff scores in 2025-26 have been 85-95 points depending on occupation. You almost certainly need 20 English points (PTE 79+) to be competitive. Check the Subclass 189 requirements before applying.

Subclass 190 — Skilled Nominated Visa

Requires nomination from a state or territory. Each state has its own English requirements, but most require at minimum Proficient English. To receive an invitation, PTE 79+ is strongly recommended as states prioritise higher-scoring candidates. Review Subclass 190 details and your state's specific nomination criteria.

Subclass 491 — Skilled Work Regional (Provisional)

Nominated by a state/territory or sponsored by a family member in a regional area. The minimum is Competent English, but competition still favours higher scores. This is a viable pathway for Nepali professionals who cannot hit 189/190 cutoffs immediately — but English points still matter. See Subclass 491 requirements for details.

Subclass 500 — Student Visa

For studying in Australia first. Minimum PTE score is typically 42-50 overall depending on the institution and course. However, if you plan to transition to PR after your studies, aiming for Proficient level from the start saves you from re-taking the test. Verify specific requirements at the Department of Home Affairs Student Visa page.

What 79+ Actually Means: All Four Bands

A common misunderstanding: you do not need 79 as an overall average. You need 79 in each of the four communicative skills bands separately — Speaking, Writing, Reading, and Listening. A student who scores 85 overall but has 72 in Writing does not qualify for Superior English.

This is why targeted section-by-section preparation matters more than general English practice. Learn more about how PTE Academic scoring works.

The Most Common Scores Nepali Students Get Stuck At

Based on experience coaching hundreds of Nepali students preparing for Australia PR:

  • Writing 65-72 is the most common sticking point. Summarize Written Text word count violations and Essay weak structure are the primary causes.
  • Speaking 68-75 — students know the templates but deliver them too robotically. The AI detects lack of prosodic variation.
  • Listening 60-70 — Highlight Incorrect Words and Write From Dictation are the difference between passing and achieving higher scores.
  • Reading 75-85 — most Nepali students score highest here. Re-order Paragraph is the main risk task.

How Many Attempts Does It Take?

Test fees and availability vary by location and date — check Pearson's official pricing and confirm in your myPTE account before payment. Students who prepare without guidance often require multiple attempts. Students who take structured coaching typically achieve their target more efficiently. The investment in professional preparation often saves both time and money in repeat test fees.

Smriti Simkhada's Strategy for Achieving Your Target Score

With consistent high scores across all PTE bands, the strategy I teach is scoring system-focused: understanding exactly what the AI evaluates in each task and giving the machine what it rewards. These strategies can improve consistency, but your score ultimately depends on English ability, task performance, and official scoring criteria.

For Australia PR preparation specifically, the approach is:

  1. Diagnose your current weak band first. Take a mock test, identify which of the four skills is furthest from your target.
  2. Fix your weakest band in weeks 1-2. Speaking and Writing have the highest task-by-task impact.
  3. Consolidate strong bands in week 3. Don't let strong bands slip while fixing weak ones.
  4. Full mock test in week 4. Simulate real test conditions. Identify any remaining risk tasks.

2025 English-band changes — important context

From 7 August 2025, DOHA changed how it interprets PTE Academic results. The English bands (Functional, Vocational, Competent, Proficient, Superior) are now applied per skill (Listening / Reading / Writing / Speaking) rather than to a single overall score. Articles or coaches still using "PTE 50 overall" for Competent or "PTE 65 overall" for Proficient are referencing the older rule. For tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, every component must meet the per-skill minimum. Always check the latest DOHA English language page before assuming a score level.

Last fact-checked on 2026-05-08 against official sources (Pearson PTE, Australia Department of Home Affairs, AHPRA, IRCC, GOV.UK, INZ). Test fees, score requirements, and visa rules can change at any time — always verify the latest details on the relevant official website before booking or applying.
