PTE Core CLB Score Guide: The Numbers That Matter for Canada
If you are taking PTE Core for Canada immigration, the target is not a high overall score. The target is a specific Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level in each of the four skills: Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing.
Below: the full PTE Core to CLB table, CRS points per CLB level, two worked examples, and a decision path for a Writing score stuck at 79.
What Is CLB?
The Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) are Canada's national scale for describing the English ability of adult immigrants. The scale runs from CLB 1 to CLB 12, and IRCC uses it to set the language requirement for each immigration program.
PTE Core does not report one CLB for the whole test. IRCC converts each of your four PTE Core skill scores to a CLB level on its own, using the equivalency chart on its language-testing page. A strong Speaking score cannot make up for a weak Writing score.
Official PTE Core to CLB Conversion Table (2026)
Each cell is the PTE Core score range for that CLB level in that skill. The ranges are different for every skill, so read your own column, not the row above it.
| CLB Level | Listening | Reading | Speaking | Writing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CLB 10 | 89–90 | 88–90 | 89–90 | 90 |
| CLB 9 | 82–88 | 78–87 | 84–88 | 88–89 |
| CLB 8 | 71–81 | 69–77 | 76–83 | 79–87 |
| CLB 7 | 60–70 | 60–68 | 68–75 | 69–78 |
| CLB 6 | 50–59 | 51–59 | 59–67 | 60–68 |
| CLB 5 | 39–49 | 42–50 | 51–58 | 51–59 |
| CLB 4 | 28–38 | 33–41 | 42–50 | 41–50 |

CLB 9 in PTE Core: Exact Scores
CLB 9 is the level most Express Entry candidates aim for. The PTE Core minimums for CLB 9 are:
- Listening: 82 (CLB 9 range 82–88)
- Reading: 78 (CLB 9 range 78–87)
- Speaking: 84 (CLB 9 range 84–88)
- Writing: 88 (CLB 9 range 88–89)
There is no averaging. IRCC checks the minimum level in all four abilities to decide program eligibility, then awards CRS points for each ability separately. One skill below its CLB 9 cut-off makes your overall CLB 8 and also earns CLB 8 points for that one skill.
How CLB Level Affects Your CRS Points (Express Entry)
In Express Entry, the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) gives first-official-language points for each skill based on its CLB level. The points are lower if you have a spouse or common-law partner coming with you.
| CLB level (per skill) | CRS points per skill, single | CRS points per skill, with spouse | All four skills, single |
|---|---|---|---|
| CLB 10 or higher | 34 | 32 | 136 |
| CLB 9 | 31 | 29 | 124 |
| CLB 8 | 23 | 22 | 92 |
| CLB 7 | 17 | 16 | 68 |
| CLB 6 | 9 | 8 | 36 |
| CLB 4 or 5 | 6 | 6 | 24 |
Source: IRCC, Comprehensive Ranking System criteria. Last verified 2 October 2026.
The size of each step is uneven. For a single applicant, moving one skill from CLB 7 to CLB 8 adds 6 points, CLB 8 to CLB 9 adds 8 points, and CLB 9 to CLB 10 adds 3 points. CLB 9 is the usual target because it is the biggest step.
CLB 9 in all four skills is worth 124 points for a single applicant, against 68 at CLB 7, a gap of 56 points. With a spouse, the same comparison is 116 against 64, a gap of 52.
Worked Examples: Four PTE Core Scores to CLB and CRS Points
Two illustrative profiles (not real students), using only the tables above.
Example 1: Listening 82, Reading 78, Speaking 84, Writing 79
| Skill | PTE Core score | CLB | CRS, single | CRS, with spouse |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Listening | 82 | CLB 9 | 31 | 29 |
| Reading | 78 | CLB 9 | 31 | 29 |
| Speaking | 84 | CLB 9 | 31 | 29 |
| Writing | 79 | CLB 8 | 23 | 22 |
| Total | Overall CLB 8 | 116 | 109 |
Writing 79 is the bottom of the CLB 8 Writing range (79–87), so this profile is overall CLB 8. If Writing reached 88, all four skills would be CLB 9 and the language total would rise from 116 to 124 points (single), or from 109 to 116 (with spouse). That is 8 points, or 7 with a spouse, for 9 more marks in one skill.
The other three scores each sit exactly on their CLB 9 minimum. One mark lower in any of them drops that skill to CLB 8.
Example 2: Listening 89, Reading 80, Speaking 90, Writing 70
| Skill | PTE Core score | CLB | CRS, single | CRS, with spouse |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Listening | 89 | CLB 10 | 34 | 32 |
| Reading | 80 | CLB 9 | 31 | 29 |
| Speaking | 90 | CLB 10 | 34 | 32 |
| Writing | 70 | CLB 7 | 17 | 16 |
| Total | Overall CLB 7 | 116 | 109 |
The language total is the same as Example 1, but the overall CLB is a full level lower, because overall CLB is the lowest skill while CRS points are added skill by skill. Lifting Writing from 70 to 79 (CLB 8) adds 6 points; lifting it to 88 (CLB 9) adds 14 points single, or 13 with a spouse.
Your own scores will not match either example. The PTE Core to CLB calculator shows the CLB band for each of your four scores and your overall CLB, the lowest of the four. Then use the CRS table above to price a retake.
Stuck at Writing 79? A Decision Path
Three skills at CLB 9 and Writing at 79 is the gap we see most often. Work through this before booking a retake.
- Confirm the band. Writing 79 is CLB 8. CLB 9 Writing starts at 88, so the gap is 9 marks.
- Count the points. If Writing is your only CLB 8 skill, moving it to CLB 9 adds 8 first-language CRS points as a single applicant, or 7 with a spouse.
- Compare with your own gap. Check your full CRS against recent rounds on the IRCC rounds of invitations page. We don't quote cut-offs here because they change every round.
- Price the risk. PTE Core has no single-section retake, so all four skills are scored again. If your other skills sit right on their CLB 9 minimums, as in Example 1, a weaker day in one of them can cost you more than Writing gains.
- Check the dates. IRCC requires test results to be less than 2 years old when you create your Express Entry profile and when you submit your PR application.
- Prepare for the right task. If you do retake, train Write Email properly. It is the one Writing task PTE Academic candidates have never practised, and Pearson scores it on seven traits: content, email conventions, form, organization, vocabulary, grammar and spelling (see the next section).
Writing 88+: The CLB 9 Bottleneck
In our coaching, Writing is the skill that most often blocks CLB 9, and the table shows why. Speaking CLB 9 spans 84–88. Writing CLB 9 is only 88–89, at the very top of the scale. A Writing score of 85 is CLB 8 (23 CRS points for that skill as a single applicant), not CLB 9 (31 points).
Write Email needs a format PTE Academic never tested. Students who prepared for the Academic essay often write emails like arguments, and lose marks on email conventions, organization and content. A high-scoring email has a greeting, a clear purpose, every prompt point answered, a request or next step, and a sign-off.
If Writing is the one skill keeping you at CLB 8, feedback on your own responses closes the gap faster than more templates. That is what 1-on-1 PTE Core coaching with the team of Smriti Simkhada is built for.

Common Mistakes: Tips for Nepali Students
- Carrying over a PTE Academic target. A 79 in Writing is only CLB 8 in PTE Core. Plan from the CLB table, not from an Academic score.
- Running out of time in Reading. Re-order Paragraphs and Fill in the Blanks eat the clock; practise splitting your time across tasks.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is CLB 9 in PTE Core?
CLB 9 in PTE Core requires at least Listening 82, Reading 78, Speaking 84, and Writing 88. Because IRCC converts each skill separately and uses your lowest skill for program eligibility, every one of the four skills must reach these minimums for an overall CLB 9. In Express Entry, CLB 9 is worth 31 CRS points per skill for a single applicant with no spouse.
What is CLB 8 in PTE Core?
CLB 8 in PTE Core requires at least Listening 71, Reading 69, Speaking 76, and Writing 79. CLB 8 is worth 23 CRS points per skill (single, no spouse). Writing 79 is only CLB 8.
What is CLB 7 in PTE Core?
CLB 7 in PTE Core requires at least Listening 60, Reading 60, Speaking 68, and Writing 69. CLB 7 is the minimum for the Federal Skilled Worker Program and is worth 17 CRS points per skill (single, no spouse).
Is there a PTE Core to CLB conversion table?
Yes. The full PTE Core to CLB table (CLB 4 to 10) for all four skills is on this page. As a quick reference: CLB 10 = L89 / R88 / S89 / W90 and CLB 4 = L28 / R33 / S42 / W41.
Does IRCC use the PTE Core overall score?
No. For Express Entry, IRCC converts each of your four PTE Core skill scores to a CLB level separately. Your overall score does not decide your CLB.
How many CRS points is CLB 10 vs CLB 9?
The difference per skill is 3 points for a single applicant (34 vs 31). Across four skills, CLB 10 gives 136 CRS points against 124 for CLB 9, a difference of 12. CLB 9 vs CLB 7 matters far more: a 56-point gap.
Can I retake just one section of PTE Core?
No. You must retake the full PTE Core test, and all four skills are scored again. Check the current fee at pearsonpte.com when booking, and prepare thoroughly before each attempt.
Can I use PTE Academic for Canadian permanent residency?
No. For Express Entry, IRCC accepts PTE Core, CELPIP-General and IELTS General Training. PTE Academic is not accepted, so do not take it if your goal is Canadian PR through Express Entry.
How long are PTE Core results valid for Express Entry?
IRCC requires your results to be less than 2 years old both when you complete your Express Entry profile and when you submit your application for permanent residence.
Is CLB 9 enough to qualify for Express Entry?
CLB 9 is above the CLB 7 minimum for the Federal Skilled Worker Program, so it clears eligibility on language. At CLB 9 each skill earns 31 CRS points, 124 in total for a single applicant, against 68 at CLB 7. Whether that is enough depends on your full CRS profile and the draw.
What PTE Core score is CLB 9?
CLB 9 needs Listening 82–88, Reading 78–87, Speaking 84–88, and Writing 88–89, per Pearson's PTE Core concordance. Writing 88 is the hardest cut-off: a 79 in Writing is only CLB 8. Run all four scores through the PTE Core → CLB calculator to see each skill's CLB band and your overall CLB.
I'm one skill short of CLB 9 — what should I do?
Three skills at CLB 9 and one at CLB 8 is the Express Entry gap we see most often. Work out what that one skill is worth with the decision path above, then train the weak skill specifically. Our 1-on-1 coaching plans (7 days, 17 days or 1 month) focus on that skill, with timezone-flexible sessions for students in Canada, Australia and Nepal. See how 1-on-1 coaching works.
Conclusion: Start Targeting Your CLB Score
