Canada Application Timeline

The 8-step Canada application process from Nepal

  1. 1

Shortlist DLI (Designated Learning Institution) + program

Only DLI-registered colleges and universities qualify for the study permit. Canada has three intakes — September (Fall, primary), January (Winter), and May (Summer). Public universities (Toronto, McGill, UBC, Waterloo, McMaster) and PGWP-eligible public colleges (Seneca, Conestoga, Centennial, Humber) are typical Nepali picks. Shortlist 5–8 institutions.

  2. 2

Take PTE Academic or PTE Core

Most Canadian universities accept PTE Academic (Overall 58–70 typical). For Canada PR via Express Entry, PTE Core is the accepted Pearson test (mapped to CLB 7–10). If you plan to study + immigrate, take PTE Core now so the score is ready for your post-graduation Express Entry / CEC application. Target CLB 7 (PTE Core L60 R60 W69 S68) at minimum; CLB 9 (L82 R78 W88 S84) unlocks higher CRS points.

  3. 3

    Apply to DLIs

Apply directly via each university's portal or via OUAC (Ontario undergraduate central application). Submit transcripts (NEB-attested, WES-evaluated for some institutions), SOP, PTE score, references, and the application fee (CAD 100–250 per university). Expect 4–10 weeks for an offer letter.

  4. 4

Accept offer → pay tuition deposit → receive LOA

Once you accept the offer and pay the first-semester tuition (usually CAD 10,000–20,000), the DLI issues your LOA (Letter of Acceptance) — the document you need for the study permit application. LOA includes program length, tuition, and DLI number.

  5. 5

Get your Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL/TAL) + prove funds (CAD 22,895)

Since January 2024, most study permit applicants need a Provincial/Territorial Attestation Letter (PAL/TAL) from the province where their DLI is located — the university or the province issues it after you accept the offer. Master's, PhD, and K-12 applicants at public DLIs are exempt as of 2026. Separately, prove cost-of-living funds: CAD 22,895 (single applicant outside Quebec, IRCC rate from 1 September 2025). Most students buy a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) for this amount from an approved Canadian bank (Scotiabank, ICICI Bank Canada, CIBC, RBC, SBI Canada). The GIC is released to you in monthly instalments after arrival.

  6. 6

Apply for the Canada Study Permit (standard stream)

The Student Direct Stream (SDS) was discontinued by IRCC on 8 November 2024 — and Nepal was never on the SDS country list anyway. All Nepali applicants now use the standard study permit stream. Apply online via the IRCC Portal. Fee: CAD 150 + biometrics CAD 85 = CAD 235 total. Required: LOA from a DLI, PAL (if your category needs one), proof of funds (GIC or bank statements), proof of any tuition paid, medical exam, English test report. Processing time varies by visa office — typically 8–16+ weeks from Nepal; check the IRCC processing-time tool for the current estimate.

  7. 7

    Biometrics + medical exam

Submit biometrics at VFS Kathmandu (no other Nepal location does Canada biometrics). Medical exam from an IRCC-approved panel physician (limited list in Kathmandu — IOM Kathmandu is standard). Both must be completed before the visa decision. Biometrics fee CAD 85; medical exam NPR 8,000–12,000.

  8. 8

    Travel + arrival in Canada

Once approved you receive a Port of Entry (POE) Letter — not the study permit itself. Show the POE letter at the Canadian airport — the officer prints your study permit on arrival. Register with the DLI, apply for SIN (Social Insurance Number) within 1 week, set up provincial health card, and open a Canadian bank account. PGWP (Post-Graduation Work Permit) is available for up to 3 years after program completion.

Canada Application FAQ

Canada study from Nepal — FAQs

Is SDS (Student Direct Stream) still available for Nepali students?+
No. IRCC discontinued the Student Direct Stream on 8 November 2024 — and Nepal was never on the SDS-eligible country list to begin with (the 14 SDS countries were India, China, Pakistan, the Philippines, Vietnam, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Morocco, Peru, Senegal, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, and Antigua and Barbuda). All Nepali applicants now apply via the standard study permit stream. Old advice on the internet still refers to SDS — ignore it; check canada.ca for current rules.
Can I use PTE Core for the Canada study permit?+
IRCC accepts PTE Core for the PGWP language test requirement and for Express Entry / PNP / Canadian Experience Class permanent residence — but not as the English test for the study permit itself. For the study permit, your DLI sets the English minimum and most accept PTE Academic. PTE Core is the test you'll lean on after graduation for the PGWP language proof (added Nov 2024) and PR applications.
What is the GIC and how do I buy it?+
A Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) of CAD 22,895 (IRCC rate effective 1 September 2025, updated annually) is the preferred way to prove cost-of-living funds. You buy it from an approved Canadian bank — Scotiabank, ICICI Bank Canada, CIBC, RBC, SBI Canada — before applying for the study permit. After arrival in Canada you receive the funds back in 12 monthly instalments. If you don't buy a GIC, you can prove the same amount via bank statements, sponsor affidavits, and source-of-funds documents, but a GIC is the simplest single-document option.
What is a PAL/TAL and do I need one?+
A Provincial/Territorial Attestation Letter (PAL/TAL) is a document from the province where your DLI is located, confirming you're counted within the province's allocated student permit cap. IRCC introduced PALs in January 2024 to control inbound study permit volumes. As of 2026, PALs are required for most undergraduate, college, and non-degree applicants — but Master's, PhD, and K-12 students at public DLIs are exempt. Your university or province issues the PAL after you accept the offer; without it (when required), IRCC will return your application unprocessed.
How long does the Canada study permit take to process from Nepal?+
With SDS gone, all Nepali applicants use the standard stream. Processing time varies significantly by visa office and time of year — typically 8–16 weeks from Nepal, though some applications take longer. Always check the live IRCC processing-time tool (canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/application/check-processing-times.html) for the current estimate before lodging. Apply 4–6 months before your course start date to leave margin for biometrics, medical, and any additional document requests (RDR).
What is PGWP and how long can I work after graduation?+
The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) lets you stay in Canada after completing an eligible program at a DLI. Duration: 8 months–2 years of study = same-length PGWP; 2+ years of study = up to 3 years. As of 1 November 2024, IRCC added two new requirements: (1) a language test — CLB 7 for university bachelor's/master's/doctoral programs or CLB 5 for college/polytechnic/non-university (PTE Core is accepted for proving this); (2) for college and non-university programs, graduates must complete a program from IRCC's eligible field-of-study list (~920 CIP-coded fields). Public-Private Partnership college programs are no longer PGWP-eligible (effective 1 September 2024). University bachelor's/master's/doctoral graduates are exempt from the field-of-study list but still need the language test.
Can I work while studying on a Canada study permit?+
Yes — up to 24 hours per week off-campus during the academic session (this cap was raised from 20 in late 2024); full-time during scheduled breaks. On-campus work is unlimited. You don't need a separate work permit — work rights are part of the study permit. Get your SIN (Social Insurance Number) within the first week of arrival to start work.
How do I get a Canada PR after studying — Express Entry vs PNP?+
After PGWP, the two main PR pathways are Express Entry (federal Comprehensive Ranking System) and Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs). Canadian Experience Class (CEC) under Express Entry requires 1 year of Canadian skilled work experience. PNPs vary by province — some target specific occupations. PTE Core score directly impacts your CRS points: CLB 7 = 17 points/skill, CLB 9 = 23 points/skill, CLB 10 = 24 points/skill. Combined with a spouse's language and your education, this is often the difference between an invitation and waiting.
Which Canadian city / province should Nepali students pick?+
Toronto (Ontario) has the largest Nepali community, biggest job market, and most DLIs — also the highest cost of living. Vancouver (BC) for tech/UBC, also expensive. Montreal (Quebec) is cheaper but requires basic French. Calgary, Edmonton (Alberta), and Halifax, Moncton (Atlantic provinces) have Atlantic Immigration Program / PNP advantages and lower cost. Pick by program fit first, PR strategy second, lifestyle third.
