How to Apply to Australian Universities from Nepal — Subclass 500 Visa
The complete Australia study application pathway for Nepali students. CRICOS shortlisting, PTE Academic, CoE, Genuine Student (GS) responses (replaced the old GTE statement on 23 March 2024), OSHC, subclass 500 visa, and the subclass 485 post-study work visa — plus 1-on-1 PTE mentorship from Smriti Simkhada (90/90 PTE Academic scorer).
The 8-step Australia application process from Nepal
- 1
Shortlist CRICOS-registered universities + courses (12–18 months out)
Australia has two main intakes — February (Semester 1, primary) and July (Semester 2). Only CRICOS-registered universities and courses qualify for the subclass 500 student visa. Group of Eight, Australian Technology Network, and Regional Universities all have Nepali-friendly admission. Shortlist 5–8 across stretch/match/safe.
- 2
Take PTE Academic
Australian universities and the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) accept PTE Academic. Target Overall 58 for foundation/diploma, 65 for Bachelor's, 65–79 for Master's. Higher score helps with university scholarships and is the same score you'll use later for PR (Proficient L58/R59/W69/S76 = +10 PR points; Superior L69/R70/W85/S88 = +20).
- 3
Apply to universities — direct or via registered agent
You can apply directly to most Australian universities online (free in most cases) or via a registered education agent (commission paid by university). Submit transcripts, SOP, English test, and references with each application. Expect 2–6 weeks for an offer letter from postgraduate, 4–10 weeks for undergraduate.
- 4
Accept offer → pay deposit → receive CoE
Once you accept the Letter of Offer and pay the first-semester tuition (usually AUD 12,000–22,000) plus OSHC for the visa period, the university issues your CoE (Confirmation of Enrolment) — the document you need for the subclass 500 visa. CoE is generally issued within 5–10 business days of payment.
- 5
Take out OSHC (Overseas Student Health Cover)
OSHC is mandatory for the full duration of your visa. Major providers: Bupa, Medibank, Allianz, ahm, nib. For a single student: AUD 600–800/year. For a couple: AUD 3,000–4,000/year. For family: AUD 5,000+/year. Most universities offer a preferred provider — you can switch any time.
- 6
Apply for subclass 500 (Student visa) via ImmiAccount
Visa fee: AUD 2,000 (from 1 July 2024; was AUD 1,600 — and check immi.homeaffairs.gov.au for any further increases). Apply online via ImmiAccount with: CoE, PTE Academic, financial proof (12 months tuition + AUD 29,710 living costs), OSHC certificate, passport, Genuine Student (GS) responses, biometrics at AVAC/VFS Kathmandu. Processing time varies by provider risk tier under Ministerial Direction 111 (replaced MD 107 on 19 December 2024) — typical higher-ed processing 6–12 weeks; check the live indicator on the Home Affairs site.
- 7
Complete the Genuine Student (GS) test responses
The Genuine Student requirement replaced the older Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) statement on 23 March 2024. Instead of a 1,000-word essay, GS uses targeted online questions: your ties to Nepal, why you chose this course/provider, your understanding of life as an Australian student, your study and post-study plans, and your immigration history. Crucially, GS explicitly recognises legitimate post-study PR pathways — you no longer have to argue you'll definitely return to Nepal. Answer specifically, consistently with your other documents, and don't inflate ties or hide intentions.
- 8
Pre-departure + arrival
Visa granted → book OSHC start date to match flight. Arrange airport pickup or onward transport, share-house or homestay accommodation, AUD forex/student account, mobile SIM. Most universities run an Orientation Week before classes. The subclass 485 Temporary Graduate visa is the standard post-study pathway — post the July 2024 reforms: Bachelor's 2 years, Master's coursework 2 years, Master's research 3 years, PhD 3 years. Max age 35 (50 for Hong Kong / British National Overseas applicants under bilateral arrangement). The 485 application fee was raised again in March 2026 — budget AUD 2,300+ primary applicant and check current Home Affairs schedule before lodging.
