Critical for UK: PTE Academic vs PTE Academic UKVI

The UK Home Office only accepts PTE Academic UKVI (a Secure English Language Test — SELT) for the Student Route visa. The regular PTE Academic is fine for most UK university admissions, but it will not satisfy the visa requirement. Always book PTE Academic UKVI if you're visa-bound — otherwise you risk retaking the test.

UK Application Timeline

The 8-step UK application process from Nepal

  1. 1

Shortlist UK universities + courses (12–15 months out)

UK has two main intakes: September (primary, most courses) and January (limited, mostly Master's). Shortlist 5–8 universities ranging from "stretch" to "safe". For undergraduate, check UCAS Tariff points against your NEB +2 grades. For postgraduate, check the specific Master's entry requirements per course.

  2. 2

Take PTE Academic UKVI (the SELT variant)

For UK university admission, most universities accept the regular PTE Academic. But for the UK Student Route visa, the Home Office requires a Secure English Language Test (SELT) — PTE Academic UKVI. Same content as PTE Academic, taken at an authorised SELT centre with extra ID verification. Target Overall 59+ (CEFR B2) for degree-level study; lower if your course is below degree.

  3. 3

    Submit university applications

Undergraduate: apply via UCAS by the equal-consideration deadline (18:00 UK on 14 January for 2026 entry — UCAS has moved the date earlier in recent cycles, so always verify on ucas.com for your specific entry year). 15 October is the deadline for Oxford, Cambridge, medicine, dentistry, and veterinary. Postgraduate: apply directly to each university — most accept rolling applications, but funded courses close early. Submit SOP, transcripts, references, and your PTE score with each application.

  4. 4

Receive offers — conditional or unconditional

Conditional offer means you still need to meet a condition (e.g. final exam result, PTE score). Unconditional means you're in. Accept your firm choice (CF) and one insurance choice (CI) via UCAS. For postgraduate, you usually have 4–6 weeks to accept and pay the deposit.

  5. 5

Receive CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies)

Once you accept the offer, meet all conditions, and pay the tuition deposit (usually GBP 2,000–5,000), the university issues your CAS — a single reference number you need for the visa application. CAS is valid for 6 months. You cannot apply for the Student Route visa without a valid CAS.

  6. 6

Apply for the UK Student Route visa

Apply online up to 6 months before your course start date. Fee: GBP 558 (out-of-country, current rate; verify on gov.uk before lodging — the Home Office adjusts the fee periodically). Pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) — GBP 776/year for students. Biometrics at VFS Kathmandu. Submit: CAS, PTE Academic UKVI, financial proof (28 consecutive days), tuberculosis test, ATAS certificate if your course requires it. Dependants: since 1 January 2024, Student visa holders cannot bring partners or children EXCEPT for PhD/doctoral, research-based Master's, or government-sponsored courses longer than 6 months.

  7. 7

    Prepare for the credibility interview

UKVI may schedule a credibility interview (video or in-person) to verify your study intent, course knowledge, financial plan, and post-study intentions. Be ready to articulate why this course at this university, how you'll fund your studies, and what you plan to do after graduation. PTE Speaking practice helps fluency under pressure.

  8. 8

    Travel + arrival in UK

Visa decision typically within 3 weeks (priority service is 5 working days for extra fee). Collect your BRP (Biometric Residence Permit) at a UK post office within 10 days of arrival. Open a student bank account, register with a GP, and attend university enrolment. Graduate Route work visa is available for 2 years after course completion (3 years for PhD).

UK Application FAQ

UK study from Nepal — FAQs

What is PTE Academic UKVI and why do I need it separately?+
PTE Academic UKVI is the Secure English Language Test (SELT) variant of PTE Academic, recognised by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) for visa applications. The test content is identical to regular PTE Academic — same 4 skills, same questions, same scoring — but it must be taken at an authorised SELT centre with extra ID verification. UK universities mostly accept regular PTE Academic for admission, but the Home Office only accepts PTE Academic UKVI for the Student Route visa.
What PTE score do I need for a UK Student Route visa?+
For degree-level study (Bachelor's, Master's, PhD) the UKVI SELT minimum is CEFR B2 — PTE Academic UKVI Overall 59 with no component below 59. For below-degree courses (foundation, pre-sessional English) the SELT minimum is CEFR B1 — PTE Academic UKVI Overall 43 with at least 43 in each skill (an older 36-overall benchmark you may see online corresponds to CEFR A2, not B1, and does not satisfy the SELT requirement). Your university may demand a higher score for admission — meet the higher of the two.
When should I apply to UK universities from Nepal?+
For undergraduate via UCAS, the equal-consideration deadline was 18:00 UK on 14 January for 2026 entry — UCAS has moved the date earlier in recent cycles, so always verify on ucas.com for your specific entry year. Apply 6–9 months before. For Oxford, Cambridge, medicine, dentistry, and veterinary: 15 October deadline. For postgraduate, apply 8–12 months before your intended intake; popular Master's with scholarships often close by January or February for September start.
How much money do I need to show for the UK visa?+
You must show 9 months of living costs (GBP 1,171 × 9 = GBP 10,539 outside London; GBP 1,529 × 9 = GBP 13,761 in London — updated 2024) plus any unpaid first-year tuition, held in your name (or your parents') in a bank account for 28 consecutive days. The bank statement must be dated within 31 days of the visa application. Government student loans from Nepal don't count — must be readily available funds. Always check gov.uk/student-visa/money for the current figures before locking in your bank statements.
Can I bring my spouse or children with me on a UK Student visa?+
In most cases, no. From 1 January 2024, the UK banned Student visa holders from bringing dependants EXCEPT in three situations: (1) you're on a PhD or other doctoral programme, (2) you're on a research-based postgraduate course of 9+ months, or (3) you're a government-sponsored student on a course longer than 6 months. Standard taught Master's and undergraduate courses no longer allow dependants. If your dependants are already in the UK on a Student dependant visa from before this change, they keep their rights — verify with a registered immigration advisor.
What is ATAS and do I need it?+
Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) is a certificate required for international students applying for certain postgraduate courses in sensitive subjects (advanced physics, chemistry, engineering, aerospace, nuclear). Your university tells you in your CAS whether ATAS is needed. Application is free, online, and takes 30 days — apply as soon as you accept the offer.
Can I work while studying in the UK on a Student Route visa?+
Yes — 20 hours per week during term time, full-time during official holidays. You can't be self-employed, work as a professional sportsperson, or work in roles like pharmacist or doctor in training without an additional permit. Income from this work cannot be counted toward your financial requirement for the visa.
What is the Graduate Route post-study work visa?+
The Graduate Route lets you stay in the UK for 2 years after completing a Bachelor's or Master's (3 years for PhD) to work in any role or look for employment. The May 2024 Migration Advisory Committee review recommended retaining the route at 2 years, but Home Office policy is reviewed periodically — verify the current duration on gov.uk before relying on a specific figure for your intake year. No sponsorship needed, no minimum salary, and you can switch to the Skilled Worker visa later. Apply from within the UK before your Student Route visa expires; fee is GBP 822 plus IHS GBP 1,035/year (Graduate Route IHS rate, higher than the Student rate of GBP 776/yr).
How long does the UK Student Route visa take to process?+
Standard processing is 3 weeks (15 working days) from biometrics. Priority service is 5 working days for GBP 500 extra; Super Priority is next working day for GBP 1,000 extra. Apply at least 4–6 weeks before your course start date to be safe. Visa is normally valid up to 4 months before course start.
