PTE vs IELTS India: What the Choice Actually Turns On

The PTE vs IELTS India question usually arrives late and in a hurry. You have an occupation shortlisted, a skills assessment underway, and about three weeks to book something. Both tests measure similar English. Both are accepted for most of the same purposes. They part company on how speaking is marked, on what a single weak skill costs you, and on two Australian pathways where only one of them counts.

This comparison is for people applying from India in 2026: format, which pathways accept which test, the official concordance, and cost. Where a number is published and checkable, you will find it here. Where it is not, I say so instead of guessing.

Format: Where the Two Tests Diverge

Speaking is the real difference

PTE Academic scores speaking with software. You talk into a headset at a test centre, the recording is marked automatically, and no examiner sits across from you. IELTS Academic uses a live interview with a trained examiner, usually booked as a separate appointment from the other three sections.

That one design decision drives most of what follows in any PTE vs IELTS India comparison. Machine scoring removes examiner-to-examiner variation and the second appointment from your calendar. It also rewards different behaviour. Steady pacing and continuous delivery score well. A long pause while you hunt for the perfect word does not.

The two PTE speaking tasks added in August 2025

Pearson added two task types to PTE Academic on 7 August 2025, and a good deal of Indian prep material has not caught up.

• Summarize Group Discussion: you hear three people discussing an academic topic. The audio plays once and runs up to three minutes. You get 10 seconds to prepare and 2 minutes to speak. It scores Speaking and Listening together.
• Respond to a Situation: you hear a short scenario, get 10 seconds to prepare, then speak for 40 seconds. It scores Speaking only. Pearson's own instruction is blunt: do not summarise the situation, respond to it.

If a practice book gives Summarize Group Discussion four or five speakers, or hands you 40 seconds to answer, it is describing a different task. Three speakers. Two minutes.

Writing, and the word limits that end a score

PTE's Summarize Spoken Text asks for 50 to 70 words. That is the target band, not the cliff edge. Your response scores zero on all five factors only if it falls under 40 words or runs past 100. Plenty of coaching notes state that wrongly, which turns a writing task into a counting task.

One Skill Retake: IELTS has it, PTE does not

IELTS One Skill Retake lets you redo a single skill within 60 days of a computer-delivered IELTS test, once per full test, in the same country. Australia's Department of Home Affairs accepts it for tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, and AHPRA accepts it as well. PTE Academic has no equivalent. Miss one band by a point on PTE and you resit the entire test.

That is a real advantage for IELTS, and it matters most if you are short in exactly one skill.

Which Australian Pathway Accepts Which Test

Student visa, subclass 500

The standard higher-education English floor is PTE Academic 47 overall for tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, with no per-skill minimum. Packaged pathways sit lower: 39 overall with at least ten weeks of ELICOS or an eligible foundation program, and 31 overall with at least twenty weeks of ELICOS. Universities routinely ask for more, so plan against the higher number.

Temporary Graduate visa, subclass 485

The 485 runs on its own English instrument: PTE Academic 55 overall, with Listening 40, Reading 42, Writing 41 and Speaking 39. The test must be taken within 12 months before you lodge. Do not carry the points-test bands across.

Points-tested skilled visas: 189, 190, 491

English points come from per-skill PTE Academic scores for tests taken on or after 7 August 2025:

• Competent English, 0 points: Listening 47, Reading 48, Writing 51, Speaking 54
• Proficient English, 10 points: Listening 58, Reading 59, Writing 69, Speaking 76
• Superior English, 20 points: Listening 69, Reading 70, Writing 85, Speaking 88

The points-test pass mark is 65, though recent invitation rounds have cut off well above that for several occupations. Home Affairs accepts English results for roughly three years for migration, longer than the two-year window Pearson gives you to access the score report. Both are correct; they describe different clocks.

AHPRA registration for nurses and allied health

PTE Academic is accepted here. For tests taken on or after 23 April 2026 the minimums are 63 overall with Listening 58, Reading 59, Writing 60 and Speaking 76. Results stay valid for two years, and at-home versions are not accepted. Speaking 76 is where most nursing candidates stall.

AITSL for school teachers: IELTS only

Read this one twice. AITSL, the assessing authority for school teachers, does not accept PTE at all. Its published wording: it will only accept an Academic IELTS Test Report Form. The required bands are Reading 7.0, Writing 7.0, Speaking 8.0 and Listening 8.0, on a single report form from a test taken within 24 months of applying.

PTE is fine for a teacher at the visa stage and worthless at the skills-assessment stage. Booking it for an AITSL assessment burns the fee, and that is the most expensive mistake in the whole PTE vs IELTS India decision.

Score Concordance: Turning an IELTS Band Into a PTE Target

Pearson published an updated concordance in July 2025 alongside the enhanced PTE Academic. Older tables mapping IELTS 6.5 to a range in the high 50s are superseded, and they still circulate widely in Indian coaching material.

Cost: What PTE Costs in India, and What to Check for IELTS

PTE Academic in India is INR 18,900, inclusive of 18% GST, which is a base fee of INR 15,254 plus tax. PTE Academic UKVI and PTE Core carry the same INR 18,900 price. PTE Home, for UK family and settlement routes, is INR 15,300. Those prices took effect in March 2026. Confirm at the Pearson checkout before you pay: Pearson does not publish a static India price page.

For IELTS in India I am not going to quote a number. I do not have a current India fee I can source and stand behind, and a stale test fee is worse than no figure at all. Check with IDP India or British Council India on the day you book; the fee changes without much notice.

One comparison is worth running yourself. Sitting PTE Academic in Australia costs AUD 490 including GST, which at a market rate near INR 68 to the Australian dollar is roughly INR 33,400. If you are already booked to fly and are weighing testing before or after departure, testing in India is materially cheaper. Rates move, so redo that arithmetic on the day.

Why Indian Test-Takers Keep Moving Toward PTE

Three reasons come up over and over with students applying from India.

The speaking mark is not a person's judgement. How one examiner reacts to one regional accent on one morning is a variable you cannot revise for. Software scoring has its own quirks, but it is consistent, and consistency is something you can prepare against.

The per-skill targets are precise. Superior English on the Australian points test means Writing 85 and Speaking 88 on PTE. You can see which task types feed those two numbers and where your gap sits. An IELTS band 8 overall gives you a blurrier signal about what to fix.

The documentation stakes rose in January 2026. Home Affairs moved student visa applicants from four South Asian countries (India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan) up to Evidence Level 3, which means more supporting documentation at lodgement. Evidence level is applied when you lodge, not retroactively. A borderline English result now sits in a file that is already being read closely, so getting the score right first time is worth more than it was a year ago.

None of that makes PTE correct for everyone. A teacher heading into an AITSL assessment has one option, and it is IELTS. Someone a single band short in one skill may find One Skill Retake cheaper than a full PTE resit.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

• Using a pre-2025 concordance table. If a chart tells you IELTS 6.5 sits somewhere between PTE 58 and 64, it is out of date and will set your target too high or too low.
• Assuming one English rule covers every Australian visa. The subclass 500 floor, the 485 instrument and the points-test bands are three separate rule sets. Mixing them up is how people book a test, pass it, and still fall short.
• Booking PTE for an AITSL teacher assessment. AITSL accepts Academic IELTS only. No PTE score of any size fixes this.
• Choosing the wrong PTE product for the destination. Canada permanent residence uses PTE Core. UK visa routes use PTE Academic UKVI, a separate test from the PTE Academic you sit for Australia. PTE Express is for United States university admission only and carries no weight in any migration application.
• Booking a remote-proctored English test for an Australian visa. At-home versions are not accepted for Australian visa purposes. You need the test-centre version.
• Counting on a fast rescore. Pearson gives you 14 calendar days to request one, it costs USD 160, payment is by phone only, and a human rescores your whole test. The new score replaces the old one even when it drops. Pearson publishes no turnaround time, so anyone quoting three to five days is guessing.

Step-by-Step: Settling the Choice in One Sitting

1. Write down the exact requirement you have to satisfy, in per-skill form. Not "PR", but "Proficient English for the points test" or "AHPRA registration as a registered nurse".
2. Check the assessing authority separately from the visa. Two gates, two rule sets, and the assessing authority is the one that occasionally rules PTE out entirely.
3. Convert your target with the July 2025 concordance so you are comparing the same difficulty on both scales, then write both numbers side by side.
4. Sit one scored mock of each. Your own gap beats any general PTE vs IELTS India claim about which test is easier.
5. Price the whole path, not the single sitting. If your weakness is confined to one skill, price an IELTS One Skill Retake against a full PTE resit and see which wins.
6. Book with room for one more attempt before your visa or nomination deadline. Booking so tightly that a resit becomes impossible turns a small English gap into a lost application cycle.

Notes for Nepali Students Weighing the Same Two Tests

Almost all of this applies unchanged in Kathmandu, Pokhara or Bharatpur. The Australian rules do not vary by nationality: the same subclass 500 floor of 47, the same per-skill points bands, the same AITSL restriction, the same July 2025 concordance. Nepal was moved to Evidence Level 3 in the same January 2026 change that captured India.

What differs is price. PTE Academic in Nepal is priced in US dollars at USD 220, which lands around NPR 32,000 to 33,000 depending on the rate and payment channel at checkout. IELTS on computer in Nepal is NPR 33,000, and One Skill Retake there is NPR 16,500. For a Nepali candidate short in one skill, that gap is the strongest argument for keeping IELTS in play.

Test centre availability matters more in Nepal than the fee difference does. Book early. Then work backwards from the test date.
