PTE Writing Hub

Every PTE Writing task — explained for Nepali students. Built around the three thresholds that actually matter: AHPRA Writing 60 (effective 23 April 2026), Australia PR Superior Writing 85 (post-7-August-2025 DHA framework), and Canada PR CLB 9 Writing 88.

Why Writing Decides Two PTE Skills

PTE Writing is scored on seven traits: Content, Form, Development & Coherence, Grammar, Linguistic Range, Vocabulary Range, and Spelling. Most Nepali students lose marks on Development & Coherence (Discourse) — sentence-level grammar can be strong, but paragraph cohesion under timed conditions is where the AI scorer separates Proficient (79) from Superior (85+).

Writing also feeds your Reading score via Summarize Written Text and your Listening score via Write from Dictation. A 4-point Writing lift cascades across two other skill scores.

Below are the canonical articles for every PTE Writing task, plus persona-specific plans for the three highest-stakes thresholds.

Writing Plans by Pathway

AHPRA Writing 60 — Nepali Nurses

AHPRA (effective 23 April 2026) raised Writing from 56 to 60. Most Nepali nurses already have hospital documentation experience but plateau on Discourse trait — the AI scoring penalises sentence-by-sentence narration without paragraph cohesion. Plans front-load argumentative essay structure and SWT compression discipline.

Australia PR Superior Writing 85

Under the post-7-August-2025 DHA framework, Superior English requires Writing 85 alongside L 69 / R 70 / S 88 for the +20 PR points. Writing 85 is harder than the old flat "79 each" rule — Discourse, Linguistic Range, and Vocabulary traits all need to fire. Plans focus on argumentative essay templates, vocabulary expansion, and grammar stability under timed conditions.

Canada PR — CLB 9 Writing 88

PTE Core Writing 88 maps to CLB 9 — the maximum first-language CRS points for most Express Entry candidates. PTE Core uses different Writing tasks (Email, SWT) versus PTE Academic's essay format. Plans cover the Email genre conventions and SWT pacing for Canadian English usage.

Writing Plateau (65–78) — Retake Diaspora

For Nepali diaspora students in Sydney, Melbourne, Toronto, or London who plateau at Writing 65–78 across multiple attempts. The diagnosis is almost always Discourse penalties (paragraph cohesion + topic-sentence flow), not vocabulary. 1-on-1 essay feedback loops typically lift Writing 4–8 points in 4–6 weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

What PTE Writing score do I need for AHPRA nursing registration in Australia?

For PTE Academic tests taken on or after 23 April 2026, AHPRA requires Writing 60 (raised from the previous 56), alongside Overall 63, Listening 58, Reading 59, and Speaking 76. Writing 60 is the second most common stuck point for Nepali nurses after Speaking — the AI scorer penalises sentence-by-sentence narration without paragraph cohesion. Always verify the current AHPRA English Language Skills Registration Standard before booking.

What PTE Writing score do I need for Australia PR Superior English (+20 points)?

Under the post-7-August-2025 DHA framework, Superior English requires Writing 85, alongside Listening 69, Reading 70, and Speaking 88, all in a single sitting, for the +20 PR points. Writing 85 is harder than the old flat "79 in each skill" rule — the Discourse, Linguistic Range, and Vocabulary traits all need to fire together. A 79 in Writing no longer clears the Superior threshold.

What PTE Writing score is needed for Australia PR Proficient English (+10 points)?

Proficient English requires Writing 69, alongside Listening 58, Reading 59, and Speaking 76, for +10 PR points under the post-7-August-2025 DHA component-band framework. This is a solid mid-tier target and competitive in some skilled-migration rounds.

How is PTE Writing scored?

PTE Writing is scored on seven traits: Content, Form, Development & Coherence, Grammar, Linguistic Range, Vocabulary Range, and Spelling. Most Nepali students lose marks on Development & Coherence (Discourse) — sentence-level grammar can be strong, but paragraph cohesion under timed conditions is where the AI scorer separates Proficient (79) from Superior (85+).

Does the PTE Writing section affect my Reading and Listening scores?

Yes. Writing feeds your Reading score via Summarize Written Text and your Listening score via Write from Dictation. Because these tasks are scored across two skills, a 4-point Writing lift can cascade across two other skill scores.

Why do Nepali students plateau at PTE Writing 65–78?

For diaspora students in Sydney, Melbourne, Toronto, or London who plateau at Writing 65–78 across multiple attempts, the diagnosis is almost always Discourse penalties (paragraph cohesion and topic-sentence flow), not vocabulary. 1-on-1 essay feedback loops typically lift Writing 4–8 points in 4–6 weeks.
