Ask Guru

Pick a topic, ask in your own words, and Guru writes you an answer from the sources that actually cover it — our own PTE guides, or official government and Pearson pages for migration.

Guru writes these answers rather than quoting them word-for-word, so check the source passages under each answer before acting on a fee, score or date. For your own visa situation, message Smriti directly — that always needs a person.

Where Guru’s answers come from

Each topic reads a separate set of sources, and the products are kept apart on purpose. PTE Academic, PTE Core and PTE Express are three different exams with different task lists and different timings, so a notebook that can only see one of them cannot quietly answer with another one’s rules.

PTE Academic
Pearson’s test-format pages for all three parts, the scoring pages, the rescore policy, and the official PDF for the two question types added in August 2025.
PTE Core
Pearson’s PTE Core format and scoring pages, the PTE Core Score Guide, and the IRCC page listing accepted language tests.
PTE Express
Pearson’s PTE Express product page and the launch announcement. Pearson publishes little on Express so far, so Guru will often say the sources do not cover it — which is the correct answer, not a failure.
IELTS
ielts.org: Academic and General Training formats, scoring in detail, One Skill Retake, the CEFR comparison, and the official scores guide.
Visa & PR
Official government pages — Home Affairs, IRCC and gov.uk — alongside Pearson’s migration pages.
Prep & strategy
Our own published guides. This is the one topic answered from our writing rather than an official source, because no regulator publishes advice on the mistakes Nepali speakers actually make.

Answers students ask for most

These four come up constantly, and the first three are the ones third-party practice sites most often get wrong.

How many speakers are in PTE Academic Summarize Group Discussion?

Exactly three. Not a range — Pearson’s own instructions read “You will listen to a group discussion between 3 people.” The audio runs up to 3 minutes and plays once, then you get 10 seconds to prepare and 2 minutes to speak.

Does PTE Core have Summarize Group Discussion?

No. It is a PTE Academic task only. PTE Core lists seven Listening question types and this is not one of them. Mixing the two up is the single most common mistake we see in Canada-bound students’ preparation.

How long do I get for Respond to a Situation?

It depends which test you are sitting, and this catches people out. PTE Academic gives you 10 seconds to prepare; PTE Core gives you 20. Both give 40 seconds to speak.

How is the IELTS overall band calculated?

It is the average of your four skill bands, rounded to the nearest half band. An average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band, and one ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band.

What Guru will not do

  • It will not assess your personal visa situation. Questions about eligibility or your own case go to Smriti, because in Australia only a MARA-registered agent may lawfully advise on them.
  • It will not quote a fee or score it cannot find in its sources. If the official pages do not say, Guru says so instead of guessing.
  • It will not replace checking the official source. Guru writes its answers, so the passage shown underneath is the thing to verify a number against.

Guru is free and needs no sign-up. Sources are re-fetched every night, so when Pearson or IELTS change a page, the answers follow.
