How to Book PTE Core in Canada (2026): myPTE Account, Test Centres, Rescheduling and ID
By Smriti Simkhada (90/90) · Updated
Introduction
PTE Core test booking in Canada takes about fifteen minutes online. The booking is the easy part. The parts that cost people money come later: a passport name that doesn't match the myPTE account, a reschedule attempted twelve days out, or a test date picked so late that the score can't reach an Express Entry profile in time.
This guide walks through the whole PTE Core test booking process for someone already living in Canada, on a study permit, a work permit or a PGWP, who now needs a language result for permanent residence. Every fee, rule and timing below comes from Pearson's own pages or from IRCC. Where Pearson doesn't say something, we say so instead of guessing.
We are the coaching team of Smriti Simkhada. We teach PTE one-on-one, online, and a growing share of our students now sit PTE Core in Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver or Halifax rather than in Kathmandu. These are the questions they send us the week they book.

First Check: PTE Core, Not PTE Academic
Pearson sells several tests with similar names, and the booking screen lets you pay for any of them. Pick the wrong one and the score is useless for PR.
- PTE Core is the test IRCC accepts for Express Entry. IRCC's list of English tests for Express Entry names CELPIP-General, IELTS General Training and PTE Core.
- PTE Academic is not on that list. It is the test for Australian visas, New Zealand, and university admission, including at Canadian universities.
- Neither can be taken at home. Pearson says every PTE test, Academic and Core alike, is taken on a computer at an authorised test centre.
Pearson's own test finder draws the same line. It describes PTE Core as the general English test the Canadian government recognises for immigration and citizenship visas, and PTE Academic as the academic test for university and college study, Australian and New Zealand visas, and professional registration. So: PR or citizenship in Canada, PTE Core. A Canadian university place, PTE Academic.
We still meet students in Canada who sat PTE Academic on a friend's advice. The score counted for nothing in Express Entry. If unsure which product fits your plan, read our PTE Core vs PTE Academic comparison before you pay.
How PTE Core Test Booking Works, Step by Step
Pearson's booking flow runs through pearsonpte.com and ends in a myPTE account. Here is the order Pearson's own booking guide describes.
1. Find a slot before you create the account
Choose "Book a test", then PTE Core, then "Check availability". Enter the city where you want to sit the test. Pearson shows the centres near you with open dates and times. Pearson's guide says to pick a slot at least 24 hours in advance.
2. Create your myPTE account
After you click "Book", Pearson asks you to create a myPTE account. This account is where your appointment, your reschedules and your score report will live, so use an email you will still check in two years.
The details must match your passport exactly. Pearson is specific about middle names: if your passport has one, it goes in the "Given names" field together with your first name. Name, date of birth, citizenship and gender at booking must all match the ID you bring.
Pearson lets you correct account details up to 3 days before your test. After that, and on test day, it can't be changed. If the details don't match your passport on the day, you won't be allowed to test and Pearson says you won't get a refund.
3. Answer the booking questions and pay
You answer a few booking questions, agree to Pearson's admission, reschedule and cancellation policies, and pay. Pearson accepts American Express, Discover, Mastercard and Visa. If you have a voucher or promo code, this is the screen where it goes. Review the order and click "Submit Order". The appointment then shows in myPTE and Pearson emails you the details.
PTE Core Exam Fee in Canada and Where to Find It
Pearson's public price feed for Canada lists PTE Core at CA$360.00. PTE Academic is listed at the same CA$360.00. Pearson says fees vary by country, so this figure applies to booking a Canadian centre. The same test booked in Nepal or India is priced differently.
One honest limit: the feed gives the list price only and says nothing about tax. We can't tell you whether HST or GST appears as a separate line at checkout in your province. Read the total on Pearson's final payment screen before you click "Submit Order", and treat any blog figure, this one included, as a starting point.
Budget for the result you need, not only for one sitting. If your target is CLB 9 in every skill and your practice scores sit near CLB 7, the second booking is the real cost.
Choosing a PTE Core Test Centre in Canada
Pearson's centre list for Canada currently shows 32 test centres across 22 cities. Toronto has the most, with six. Other cities on the list include:
- Ontario: Ottawa, Mississauga, Hamilton, Kitchener, Cambridge, London, Windsor
- British Columbia: Vancouver, Burnaby, Surrey, Abbotsford, Victoria
- Prairies: Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Regina
- Quebec and Atlantic Canada: Montreal, Halifax, St. John's, Charlottetown
Pearson's centre list has no field saying which test each centre runs. So we won't label any centre a "PTE Core centre". The booking screen is the only reliable answer: when you choose PTE Core and enter your city, the centres that appear with dates are the ones that offer it that week.
How to pick between two centres
- Travel time on test morning. A centre two transit changes away adds stress before a speaking section. A short trip beats a slightly earlier date.
- Weekday versus weekend. If your shifts are fixed, check both. Students working retail or care jobs often find a weekday morning that suits better than a crowded Saturday.
- Room size. Pearson says PTE Core is taken in a small test centre with no more than 15 seats per room. Others will still be speaking around you, so practise with background noise either way.
Rescheduling, Cancelling and Refunds
This is where most avoidable losses happen. Pearson's cancellation and rescheduling policy (last updated 17 September 2026) says:
- Free reschedule if there are more than 14 full calendar days left before your test.
- Within 14 days you can't reschedule at all. The "Reschedule" button disappears from myPTE. Your only option is to cancel under the refund rules and book again.
- Maximum of 6 reschedules for a single appointment.
- Cancel more than 14 full calendar days out: full refund.
- Cancel between 14 and 7 full calendar days out: 50% refund.
- 7 calendar days or fewer: no refund.
Pearson counts from your booked test time, not from midnight. If your test is at 2:00 PM, the cut-offs fall at 2:00 PM too.
If you fall ill or a family emergency hits
Pearson may, at its discretion, reschedule for free. You submit the "Request Emergency Reschedule" form with evidence. It can go in from 14 full calendar days before the test and must be submitted no later than 72 hours after your appointment. There's no automatic right to a free rebooking, so send it as soon as you know.
ID You Need on PTE Core Test Day
PTE Core has its own ID rule because it serves the Canadian government. Pearson accepts:
- A passport, accepted anywhere and preferred.
- A Canadian Permanent Resident Card, accepted in Canada only. Most people sitting PTE Core for PR won't have one yet, but someone applying for citizenship will.
Pearson's general ID rules apply on top: the document must be physical, unexpired and issued no more than 10 years ago, and it must be the same ID you selected at booking. If you arrive without acceptable ID, you aren't let into the test room and you lose the fee.
Two situations catch people in Canada. If your passport is with an embassy or IRCC for a visa application, Pearson says you must request it back to show on test day. If you are renewing or replacing a lost passport, Pearson says to wait for it before booking. Immigrants, refugees and stateless people without these documents complete Pearson's separate form before scheduling. Pearson says its support team replies in 3 to 5 working days, so leave room.
Results, Score Validity and Your CLB Target
Pearson says most test-takers get PTE Core results within two business days, and in some cases up to five. You get an email, then you open the score report in myPTE under "My Activity". Pearson says you can share it with IRCC using your Score Report Code or by sending it from myPTE.
For Express Entry, IRCC wants results that are less than 2 years old at both points: when you complete your profile and when you submit your permanent residence application. A test taken too early can expire between the two.
What score to book for
Your PTE Core scores convert to Canadian Language Benchmark levels skill by skill. The Federal Skilled Worker Program needs at least CLB 7 in all four abilities. The minimum PTE Core scores for CLB 7 are Listening 60, Reading 60, Speaking 68 and Writing 69. CLB 9 needs Listening 82, Reading 78, Speaking 84 and Writing 88.
Writing is the skill that usually decides it. A Writing score of 79 is CLB 8, not CLB 9. Run your practice scores through our PTE Core CLB calculator before you choose a date. Our PTE Core for Canada page and the PTE Core CLB score guide explain how each band feeds your CRS language points.
Common Mistakes to Avoid When Booking PTE Core
- Booking PTE Academic by habit. Same price in Canada, different test. IRCC won't take it for Express Entry.
- Leaving out a middle name. It belongs in "Given names". A mismatch found on test day means no test and no refund.
- Trying to reschedule inside 14 days. The button is gone. You can only cancel, and at that point you get half the fee back or nothing.
- Booking the week before an Express Entry deadline. Results usually take two business days but can take five. A retake then needs a new slot and another wait.
- Bringing an old passport. Issued more than 10 years ago is not accepted, even if it hasn't expired.
- Assuming a centre runs PTE Core because a friend sat PTE Academic there. Check the booking screen with PTE Core selected.
Step-by-Step Booking Plan
- Six to eight weeks out: take a scored practice test or a mock and put the four skill scores into the CLB calculator. Decide whether you're testing for CLB 7 or CLB 9.
- Check your passport: in your hand, unexpired, issued within the last 10 years.
- Pick a date with a buffer: more than 14 full calendar days away gives you a free reschedule if your practice scores drop. Leave room for results plus one retake before any deadline.
- Create myPTE carefully: type names exactly as printed in the passport, middle names in "Given names". Screenshot the confirmation.
- Check the total at checkout: confirm the final amount before you submit.
- Diary two dates: the last day for a free reschedule, and 3 days before the test, the last day to fix account details.
- After results: share the score with IRCC through the Score Report Code or myPTE, and note the date it turns 2 years old.
Tips for Nepali Students Booking From Canada
Many of our Canadian students are Nepali, Indian or Bangladeshi, and the same few issues come up again and again.
- Name order. South Asian passports sometimes put the whole name in one field, or carry a middle name family members never use. Copy the passport, not how your name appears on your study permit or bank card.
- Passport with the consulate. If your passport is away for renewal at the Nepali or Indian mission, don't book until it comes back. Pearson is clear on this.
- Booking before you fly. If you're still in Nepal and planning to sit PTE Core before you leave, our PTE Core test centres in Nepal guide covers that side. The Canadian price above doesn't apply there.
- Speaking under pressure. Our students' commonest Core problem isn't vocabulary. It's pausing to translate from Nepali mid-sentence, which costs fluency. Practise answering out loud with a timer, every day, not just reading model answers.
- Shift work. We coach online from Nepal, and sessions run around Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver shift patterns. Book your test for the time of day you've been practising in.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much is the PTE Core exam fee in Canada?
Pearson's price feed for Canada lists PTE Core at CA$360.00. The feed doesn't say how tax is handled, so confirm the final total on Pearson's checkout screen before you pay.
Is PTE Academic accepted for Express Entry?
No. IRCC's list of English tests for Express Entry names CELPIP-General, IELTS General Training and PTE Core. PTE Academic is for study in Canada, not for PR.
Can I reschedule my PTE Core test for free?
Yes, if there are more than 14 full calendar days left before your test. Within 14 days the reschedule option disappears, and you can only cancel under the refund rules and book again.
Can I take PTE Core at home in Canada?
No. Pearson says PTE Core is only taken on a computer at an authorised PTE test centre. There is no at-home version of PTE Core.
How soon do PTE Core results come?
Pearson says most test-takers get results within two business days, and some take up to five business days. You get an email and then view the score report in myPTE.
Can I use my Canadian PR card instead of a passport?
For PTE Core, Pearson accepts a Canadian Permanent Resident Card for tests taken in Canada. A passport is accepted anywhere and is Pearson's preferred ID.
Conclusion
PTE Core test booking in Canada comes down to a few checks: book PTE Core and not Academic, match your myPTE details to your passport, pick a date more than 14 days out, and leave time for results and a possible retake before your Express Entry deadline. The fee and the centre list will change over time. Pearson's booking screen is always the live answer.
