PTE for TRA Trades Recognition Australia: Electrician, Plumber, Chef Pathway (2026)

Updated September 2026 · Reviewed by Smriti Simkhada (90/90)

Introduction

Nepali skilled tradesmen — electricians, plumbers, mechanics, chefs, carpenters, hairdressers — have a real Australian PR pathway via Trades Recognition Australia (TRA). It is less talked about than ACS for IT or AHPRA for nurses because most Nepali immigration consultancies do not specialise in trades. But the pathway exists, the demand is high, and the PTE bar is more accessible than for points-tested PR.

This article walks Nepali tradies through TRA's three main assessment programs, the PTE Academic score requirements at each step, the visa subclasses your TRA assessment unlocks, and how to build the dossier you need from Nepal.

What Is Trades Recognition Australia (TRA)?

TRA is Australia's official skills assessment authority for trade occupations. It is the trades-equivalent of ACS (for IT), CPA Australia (for accounting), and EA (for engineering). For Nepali electricians, plumbers, mechanics, chefs, and other trades, a positive TRA assessment is the gateway to skilled migration visas.

The Three TRA Assessment Programs

  • JRP — Job Ready Program: Most common for off-shore tradies. Multi-step assessment including practical evaluation in Australia.
  • OSAP — Offshore Skills Assessment Program: Skills assessment from your home country (Nepal).
  • MSP — Migration Skills Assessment for licensed/regulated trades: Used for trades that require licensing in Australia (electricians, plumbers).
