Three-Stage PTE Pathway

TRA assessment + visa stage — three different bars

TRA accepts PTE Vocational (L36 / R36 / W36 / S36) for most pathways; the visa stage requires at least Competent (50s). Most Nepali tradespeople targeting +10 PR points need to grow from Vocational to Proficient — the 1-on-1 plan stages that climb across two test sittings if needed.

Nepali trade pathways to Australian PR

Electrician

ANZSCO 341111 (General) / 341112 (Special Class). High-demand on TRA Job Ready Program (JRP) and offshore pathways. Most Nepali electricians have ITTC or CTEVT vocational qualifications — TRA assessment usually requires JRP for full registration.

Plumber

ANZSCO 334111 General Plumber. Strong demand under Skilled Occupation List. Nepali plumbers from Kathmandu, Pokhara, or Gulf experience typically clear TRA on JRP after 12 months supervised work in Australia.

Chef / Cook

ANZSCO 351311 Chef / 351411 Cook. The most common Nepali trade pathway. PTE Vocational (36s) clears most TRA assessments; DHA visa stage typically needs Competent (+0 points) at minimum.

Automotive Technician

ANZSCO 321211 Motor Mechanic (General) / 321212 (Diesel) / 321213 (Motorcycle). Nepali automotive workers from Saudi, UAE, Gulf often clear TRA after JRP. PTE plan calibrated to oral instruction and safety vocabulary.

Carpenter

ANZSCO 331212 Carpenter. Less common from Nepal but on the SOL. Works through TRA standard pathway with experience verification.

Bricklayer / Painter / Tiler

Range of construction trades on the Skilled Occupation List. Nepali workers with Gulf experience (especially UAE, Saudi) often qualify after TRA supervised work assessment.

Trade Personas

Where do you start?

Trades workers from Gulf (UAE / Qatar / Saudi)

Nepali electricians, plumbers, chefs, automotive workers already in skilled trade roles abroad. Most need TRA Job Ready Program (JRP) — a 12-month supervised work assessment in Australia. PTE Vocational clears the test stage; site-supervisor English is the practical bar.

CTEVT / ITTC vocational graduates

Nepali tradespeople with formal vocational qualifications from CTEVT, ITTC, Don Bosco, or polytechnic colleges. TRA pathway depends on whether your qualification matches an Australian Certificate III/IV equivalent. Strong written English on PTE clears most TRA pathways.

Self-taught / experience-based tradespeople

Nepali tradespeople with 5–15 years on-tool experience but no formal vocational qualification. TRA pathway is usually JRP. PTE plan focuses on Speaking and Listening for site-supervisor English; Writing/Reading PTE Vocational level (36s) is achievable in 6–8 weeks.

Chef pathway candidates

The single largest Nepali trade pathway. Most chef candidates have Gulf or India hospitality experience. TRA recognises Nepali chef qualifications when paired with verified work history. PTE Vocational + Australian residency (subclass 482 / 186) is the standard route.

TRA Vocational. Visa-stage Competent. Site-shift evenings.

Score-report diagnosis on session one. 6–8 week plan to TRA Vocational; staged Competent/Proficient plan if needed. Recurring weekly slot on your shift clock.

FAQs

TRA & PTE — Nepali Tradesperson FAQ

What PTE Academic score does TRA (Trades Recognition Australia) require?+

Most TRA pathways require PTE Vocational (36 in each band — Listening 36, Reading 36, Writing 36, Speaking 36). This is roughly equivalent to IELTS 5.0. Some specific occupations and pathways may require higher; always confirm against the TRA assessment guide for your specific occupation. The DHA visa stage applies the same component-specific PR-points bands as every other pathway — Competent (+0), Proficient (+10), or Superior (+20).

What is the Job Ready Program (JRP) and do I need it?+

JRP is a four-step TRA pathway for trades that require supervised work assessment in Australia. Steps: Provisional Skills Assessment (PSA) → 12 months Australian work in your trade → Job Ready Workplace Assessment (JRWA) → Job Ready Final Assessment (JRFA). Most Nepali electricians, plumbers, automotive workers, and chefs need JRP unless they already have Australian-recognised qualifications. PTE Vocational is required at the PSA stage.

Can I get Australia PR as a tradesperson with PTE Vocational alone?+

PTE Vocational (36s) clears the TRA skills assessment but gives 0 PR points at the DHA visa stage. Most Nepali tradespeople need at least PTE Competent (50s) for visa lodgement and Proficient (76s) for +10 PR points. Skilled migration on subclass 491 (regional) is the most common pathway — points are easier to clear with regional bonus + employer sponsorship. Subclass 186 employer-nomination is the alternative for chefs, electricians, plumbers in regional Australia.

I work in Saudi / UAE as a tradesperson. Do I need to come to Australia for JRP?+

Yes for most occupations on JRP. The 12-month supervised work assessment is performed in Australia, typically on a TSS subclass 482 or 491 visa. There are limited offshore pathways for some occupations where existing qualifications are recognised — but for electrician, plumber, automotive, and most chef pathways, Australian work is required. The 1-on-1 plan handles your PTE before the visa, then continues through JRP if needed.

How long from PTE 30 plateau to Vocational 36 (and Competent 50) with 1-on-1 mentorship?+

Most Nepali tradespeople who clear PTE Vocational on second attempt do so in 4–6 weeks of focused 1-on-1 work, given 4–5 hours of weekly practice. Going from Vocational (36s) to Competent (50s) for visa-stage points usually adds another 6–8 weeks. The blocking enabling skill is typically Speaking — site-instruction English is different from PTE Read Aloud and Repeat Sentence. Score-report diagnosis on session one decides the plan.

I work shift hours in a hotel kitchen / construction site. Can Smriti coach in my time zone?+

Yes. Concrete examples Smriti regularly runs for tradespeople: Doha 4–5:30 PM AST or 9–10 PM AST (split-shift candidates), Dubai 5–6:30 PM GST or 10–11:30 PM GST, Riyadh 5–6:30 PM AST, Sydney 6–7 PM AEST (often pre-dinner-service for chefs), Melbourne 7 PM AEDT. Hospitality and construction shift patterns are an explicit constraint — sessions schedule around your kitchen prep / site-shift hours.

Is the Rs. 15,000 1-on-1 mentorship the same product for trades as for general PR candidates?+

Same mentor, same Rs. 15,000 fee. The plan is meaningfully different — trade candidates get a Vocational-36 first goal (TRA assessment) then Competent-50 / Proficient-76 (visa stage). Reading and Listening practice uses simpler vocabulary; Speaking and Writing focus on site-supervisor and safety-instruction English versus academic essay style. The 15-day group batch (Rs. 2,500) is a feeder; for TRA + visa staging, 1-on-1 is the recommendation.
