PTE Academic vs PTE Academic UKVI — Which Test Do You Need for UK?

If you are a Nepali student planning to study, work, or settle in the UK, you need to understand the difference between PTE Academic and PTE Academic UKVI before booking your test. Booking the wrong one means your score will not be accepted by the UK Home Office, and you will need to sit the exam again.

For broader context, see the PTE Academic preparation hub and the PTE score requirements guide.

Preparation Tip

Improve Your PTE Score

Nepali students often struggle with Oral Fluency. My 15-day batch focuses on the speaking and fluency criteria that PTE evaluates — with targeted practice and feedback.

What Is PTE Academic UKVI?

PTE Academic UKVI is a version of PTE Academic specifically approved by the UK Home Office as a Secure English Language Test (SELT) for UK immigration purposes. The test content and format are identical to standard PTE Academic, but it must be taken in person at a UKVI-approved test centre and the result is reported directly to the UK Visas and Immigration system.

PTE Academic Online (the at-home version) is NOT accepted for any UK visa, even though it is the same product family. UKVI only accepts SELTs sat in person at one of its approved providers (Pearson PTE Academic UKVI / PTE Home, IELTS for UKVI, LANGUAGECERT, Trinity, or PSI Skills for English). Always confirm on gov.uk.

Key differences from standard PTE Academic:

  • Must be taken at an UKVI-approved test centre (not all PTE centres are approved)
  • Results are sent to UKVI directly
  • Generally costs more than standard PTE Academic
  • The test content and scoring are the same

When Do You Need PTE Academic UKVI?

You need PTE Academic UKVI for:

  • UK Student Visa (Student Route) — if your institution requires an SELT (Secure English Language Test)
  • UK Skilled Worker Visa
  • UK Family Visas
  • UK Settlement (ILR) applications
  • British Citizenship applications

When Can You Use Standard PTE Academic?

Standard PTE Academic (not UKVI) is typically accepted for:

  • University and college admission in the UK (the institution's own English requirement)
  • Some postgraduate research programmes that set their own language requirements

If your institution asks for an English language test for admission and does NOT specifically state it must be a UKVI-approved SELT, standard PTE Academic may be sufficient. Always confirm with the institution directly.

HEP self-assessment exception

If you will study at degree level (RQF 6) or above at a UK Higher Education Provider (HEP), the HEP may assess your English language ability itself — and the assessment must still be equivalent to CEFR B2. If your HEP relies on its own assessment, you may not need PTE Academic UKVI for the visa. Confirm with the institution and the current rule at gov.uk/student-visa/knowledge-of-english.

Score Requirements

For most UK visa applications, PTE Academic UKVI score requirements align with CEFR levels (PTE-to-CEFR bands below are widely-cited Pearson values — confirm against the current Pearson scoring guide before booking):

  • B1 level: Approximately PTE 43+ (some family visas, ILR / settlement, British citizenship)
  • B2 level: Approximately PTE 59+ (Student Route at degree level, and — from 8 January 2026 — new Skilled Worker visa applicants)
  • Skilled Worker (legacy): Applicants extending a Skilled Worker visa originally granted before 8 January 2026 may still qualify under the old B1 (PTE 43+) threshold

Always check the specific requirement for your visa type and institution on the UK Home Office or UKVI website at gov.uk.

Is There a PTE Test Centre Offering UKVI in Nepal?

UKVI-approved test centres are available in Nepal. Check the Pearson PTE official website's test centre locator, filtering for "UKVI" to find approved centres in Kathmandu. Not all Pearson test centres in Nepal offer the UKVI version — verify when booking.

Common Mistakes Nepali Students Make

  • Booking standard PTE Academic when UKVI is required for the visa type
  • Assuming the university admission score requirement = visa score requirement (they are different systems)
  • Booking at a non-UKVI-approved centre for an UKVI-required application

What Students Say About This Preparation

"Following the strategy Smriti Didi outlined, my Oral Fluency improved enough to push Speaking above 79 in my next attempt." — Rahul T., Kathmandu

"The structured approach made the difference. I had been retaking without a plan — one focused batch changed that." — Anita S., Pokhara

Results reflect individual student preparation experience. Scores depend on personal effort, starting ability, and test conditions. No specific outcome is guaranteed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the PTE UKVI test harder than standard PTE Academic?

No. The test content, format, and scoring are identical. The only difference is the administrative context (approved centre, UKVI reporting) and the higher fee.

Can I use my PTE Academic score (non-UKVI) for Australian immigration and then use a separate UKVI result for UK?

Yes. These are separate results for separate purposes. Your PTE Academic score is valid for Australian immigration independently of any PTE UKVI result you obtain.

How long is PTE UKVI valid for UK applications?

Generally 2 years, but verify with the UK Home Office for your specific visa type, as requirements can change.

Choose the Right Test for Your Pathway

If Australia is your primary goal, use PTE Academic (standard). See the Australia PTE coaching hub and PTE score requirements by pathway. For preparation regardless of test variant, the 15-day group batch (Rs. 2,500) covers all PTE Academic task types. Consult the PTE Academic guide or book a 1-on-1 mentorship.

About PTE Express: the product Pearson markets is now the Pearson English Express Test (launched Q4 2025; one-hour online test scored on the Global Scale of English; for university admissions only, not for visa use). Verify the latest status on the official Pearson site before relying on it.

Update (May 2026): Pearson's current product pages (pearsonpte.com/pte-academic and pearsonpte.com/pte-core) state that PTE Academic and PTE Core cannot be taken at home. Both must be taken at an authorised Pearson VUE test centre. The earlier "PTE Academic Online" at-home variant referenced in some older articles is no longer offered as a public alternative on Pearson's main product page.
