PTE vs IELTS for Bangladeshi Students: How to Choose in 2026

Introduction

PTE vs IELTS in Bangladesh used to be an easy call. IELTS was the test everyone's cousin had taken, the centres were familiar, and the agencies in Dhaka knew it inside out. That habit is still strong. It is no longer automatically right.

Both tests are accepted for most Australian visas. They are marked in completely different ways, though, and one of them has a single-skill retake while the other does not. For some Australian skills assessments, only one of them counts at all.

Format: Where PTE and IELTS Diverge

PTE Academic is a single sitting of about two hours on a computer at a test centre. Every answer, speaking included, is recorded and scored by Pearson's system. IELTS puts you in front of a human examiner for speaking, and depending on the version you book, the other sections are on paper or on computer.

Speaking is the real difference

In IELTS you have a conversation. The examiner can see you, can rephrase a question, and can wait while you find a word. In PTE you speak into a headset, to a timer, with no one listening in real time.

Students who freeze in front of a person often do better in PTE. Students who need a moment of human reaction to get going often do better in IELTS. Neither is "easier". The question is which room you perform better in, and you only find that out by trying both under timed conditions.

The two PTE speaking tasks added in August 2025

The enhanced PTE Academic added two speaking tasks on 7 August 2025. In Summarize Group Discussion you hear three people discuss an academic topic, get 10 seconds to prepare, and have 2 minutes to summarise it. In Respond to a Situation you get 10 seconds to prepare and 40 seconds to respond to an everyday scenario. Older PTE guides written before that date miss both, so check the date on any material you use.

Writing, and the word limits that end a score

PTE writing tasks come with strict word ranges. Go far outside them and the response can score nothing, whatever the quality. IELTS penalises short answers too, but a human reader still marks what is on the page. Students who write long by habit need to unlearn it for PTE.

One Skill Retake: IELTS has it, PTE does not

IELTS One Skill Retake lets you resit one skill within 60 days of an IELTS on Computer test, once per full test, in the same country. Home Affairs accepts it for migration for tests from 7 August 2025. PTE Academic has no equivalent. One weak skill in PTE means sitting the whole test again.

If you are consistently strong in three skills and stuck in one, that alone can be a reason to stay with IELTS.

Which Australian Pathway Accepts Which Test

Student visa, subclass 500

Home Affairs accepts both. For higher education, the English floor for the enhanced PTE is 47 overall, with no per-skill minimum at the visa stage. Your university will almost always ask for more, and you need to meet the higher of the two.

Bangladesh has been at Evidence Level 3 since January 2026, alongside India, Nepal and Bhutan. That raises the documentation load on the visa file. It does not change which English test you may use.

Points-tested skilled visas: 189, 190 and 491

Both tests are accepted. For PTE tests taken from 7 August 2025, Home Affairs uses separate bands per skill:

• Proficient English (10 points): listening 58, reading 59, writing 69, speaking 76.
• Superior English (20 points): listening 69, reading 70, writing 85, speaking 88.

The old "79 in each skill" rule no longer describes a new PTE test. Pages still quoting it were written before August 2025.

AHPRA registration for nurses and allied health

AHPRA accepts PTE Academic. For tests taken from 23 April 2026, the requirement is 63 overall with listening 58, reading 59, writing 60 and speaking 76. The speaking number is the one that catches people.

AITSL for school teachers: IELTS only

AITSL, which assesses teachers for migration, accepts only an Academic IELTS Test Report Form. It does not accept PTE. If you are a teacher heading into that assessment, the choice is already made, and paying for PTE first would be money thrown away.

Score Concordance: Turning an IELTS Band Into a PTE Target

Pearson's current comparison table, updated for the enhanced test in July 2025, maps IELTS overall bands to PTE scores:

• IELTS 6.0 is PTE 47
• IELTS 6.5 is PTE 55
• IELTS 7.0 is PTE 63
• IELTS 7.5 is PTE 71
• IELTS 8.0 is PTE 79

Older tables gave ranges such as "IELTS 6.5 equals PTE 58 to 64". Those are superseded. A concordance tells you which number to aim for. It does not promise that a university or a department will accept it, so read their own requirement page.

Cost: What Each Test Costs From Bangladesh

For IELTS, check the current fee with the British Council or IDP in Bangladesh before you compare. We haven't verified a taka figure we are willing to print, and IELTS prices move. The fee gap between the two tests is rarely the deciding factor anyway. A second attempt at either costs far more than the difference.

Why More Bangladeshi Test-Takers Are Looking at PTE

From what our students tell us, three things push them toward PTE. Results usually arrive faster, which matters when a university offer has a deadline. The speaking section removes the examiner, which suits people who get nervous in interviews. And a Dhaka centre can often offer a date within a few weeks.

Against that, PTE has only four centres in Bangladesh. Pearson lists three in Dhaka and one in Chattogram. If you live in Sylhet, Rajshahi or Khulna, sitting PTE means travel, so check that cost before you decide.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

• Choosing on reputation. "PTE is easier" and "IELTS is fairer" are both folk beliefs. Your own mock scores are the only evidence that counts.
• Converting with an old table. The pre-2025 ranges will push your PTE target off by several points.
• Booking PTE for an AITSL assessment. AITSL takes Academic IELTS only.
• Ignoring the per-skill numbers. An overall score that looks fine can still fail AHPRA or a skilled visa band on one skill.
• Switching tests after every bad result. Each switch resets the practice you built up for the previous format.

Step-by-Step: Settling the Choice in One Sitting

1. Find your assessing body. Visa only, AHPRA, AITSL, ACS or another. Read which tests it names.
2. Write the per-skill targets on one scale. If your requirement is in IELTS bands, convert them with the current table.
3. Sit one timed mock of each test. Same week, same time of day.
4. Compare skill by skill. Look at which test leaves the smaller gap on your weakest skill, not the overall.
5. Check dates near you. A test you can sit in three weeks beats one that needs a two-month wait.

Notes for Nepali Students Weighing the Same Choice

Our Nepali students face the same trade-off, with one difference. Nepal has PTE centres in more cities, so travel rarely decides it there. The AITSL rule and the per-skill bands apply to both countries equally.
