PTE Test Centres in India: How to Pick and Book Yours

Introduction

PTE test centers in India sit in more than thirty-five cities, from the metros down to towns most people outside the region could not place on a map. Which centre you book changes very little about your score and quite a lot about your test day.

I am Smriti Simkhada. I coach PTE Academic, PTE Academic UKVI and PTE Core one-on-one, and a good share of the problems that reach me are not language problems at all. They are a passport sitting at a visa office, a booking made from a stale city list, or a four-hour bus ride that ended forty minutes before a Speaking section.

Where the PTE Test Centres in India Are

India's centre network follows demand, and demand for PTE follows migration. That produces a map with two very different halves.

The metro clusters

Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune, Kolkata and Ahmedabad carry several centres each. More centres means more dates, and more dates means you can pick a slot around your preparation instead of building your preparation around whatever slot is left.

Delhi NCR deserves a note of its own. New Delhi, Noida and Gurugram are three administrative places and one travel decision. A Noida centre can be closer to a South Delhi address than a South Delhi centre is on a weekday morning. Check the route, not the city name.

The Punjab and Haryana belt

Punjab and Haryana hold a centre density that has little to do with population. Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Bathinda, Barnala and Mohali in Punjab. Ambala, Kurukshetra, Karnal, Sirsa and Gurugram in Haryana. Towns of this size would not host an international English test in most other states.

The reason shows up in public reporting on Australia-bound and Canada-bound applicants: these two states send a share far out of proportion to their population. Pearson put centres where the candidates already were. If you live anywhere in the belt, your nearest centre is probably closer than you assume.

Everywhere else

Outside those two zones the map thins quickly. Jaipur, Lucknow, Surat, Rajkot, Vijayawada, Kochi, Jammu, Chandigarh and Anand all appear on it, but a single centre in a city means a single set of dates. In an intake month, those dates fill.

This is where India differs from a small country. A test-taker in Nepal is rarely more than a domestic flight from a centre. In India, "your nearest centre" can mean a two-hour drive or a six-hour one, and the six-hour version is a scheduling problem rather than a detail.

How to Book PTE Test Centers in India

Booking runs through your Pearson account at pearsonpte.com. The order of the steps matters more than people expect.

Pick the test first, the centre second

PTE Academic, PTE Academic UKVI, PTE Core and PTE Home are separate bookings, and the centre list you see is filtered by which one you picked. A centre offering PTE Academic does not automatically offer PTE Core. Selecting the wrong product and then hunting for a nearby centre is a way to spend an evening on the wrong problem.

Academic for Australian visas and for university admission. UKVI for UK visa routes. Core for Canadian economic immigration. Home only for UK family and settlement applications, and never for a university place.

The locator is the only live list

Pearson's own centre locator and booking screen show which centres are open, which tests they run, and which dates exist right now. Every third-party city list, this one included, is a snapshot. Centres open, close, relocate and change their test offerings without announcing it to bloggers. Use a list like this one to orient yourself and the booking screen for the answer.

The fee is INR 18,900 for PTE Academic, GST included, following Pearson's March 2026 price revision. Read the total on the checkout screen before you pay it.

Book earlier than feels necessary

Seats in single-centre cities go first, and they go fastest in the months before university intakes. A seat booked three weeks out costs exactly what a seat booked three days out costs. The difference is whether you get to choose the time of day.

The Passport Rule That Ends More Bookings Than Anything Else

Pearson's identification policy names a valid passport as the ID for all PTE tests. India is not an exception. An Aadhaar card, a PAN card, a driving licence or a voter ID will not get you into the room, however official the document looks.

Three details around that rule do most of the damage:

• The document has to be physical. Pearson's policy refuses digital IDs, digital copies, images and photocopies in exactly those words. A certified photocopy is still a photocopy.
• The details have to match exactly. Name, date of birth, citizenship and gender on your booking must match the passport. Indian passports arrange given names and surnames in a particular way, and typing them in a different order at booking is the most ordinary way this goes wrong.
• The passport has to be in your hand. Not renewing, not with an agent, not at a consulate for some other application. Find out where it physically is before you choose a date.

A candidate turned away at the desk has lost the fee and the date together. There is no version of that conversation at the centre that ends well.

Test Day at an Indian Centre

Check-in

Arrive early enough that the queue is not part of your test. Check-in takes your passport, a photograph, a signature and a biometric scan, and it runs slower when several candidates walk in at once.

Everything you brought goes into a locker. Phone, watch, wallet, notes, water. You collect an erasable noteboard and a pen at the desk, and that board is the only thing you write on all morning.

The room is shared, and that changes Speaking

This is the part that surprises people most, and it repays preparation.

You test in an open room alongside other candidates at other machines. Start times are staggered, so the person beside you may be deep in Listening while you record Read Aloud, and someone across the room will be talking through Describe Image while you are trying to hold a sentence together. The headset cuts a lot of that noise. It does not cut all of it.

Practise with noise on purpose. Record yourself in a room where a television is running or someone is on a call. A student whose entire practice happened in silence meets that room for the first time on the day it counts.

Choosing Between Two Centres

A centre cannot change your score. It can change your recording.

There is durable folklore in the belt about particular centres being generous with Speaking. It is false, and the reason is worth holding on to: PTE is scored by machine from your recorded audio and your typed responses. Nobody at your centre sees or grades your test.

What a centre does affect is the quality of the recording that reaches the scoring engine. A worn headset, a microphone sitting at the wrong angle, a seat beside a door that keeps opening. If your headset sounds wrong during the setup check, say so before the test starts. Staff will swap it. Saying so afterwards achieves nothing.

Distance beats almost everything

Given two centres with a free seat, take the one you can reach rested. An overnight bus followed by a Speaking section is a scoring decision wearing the costume of a travel decision. If the only seat is far away, travel the day before and sleep near the centre.

Time of day

Pick the slot that matches when you actually practise. A morning person testing at 4pm has spent the whole day getting tired, and an evening person at 8am has spent it waking up. That sounds minor until you listen back to a Speaking recording made at the wrong end of somebody's day.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

• Booking before you know the gap. Your date should follow an honest measurement of where your score stands, not an application deadline.
• Trusting a city list from a blog. This one included. Confirm every centre on the booking screen.
• Booking the wrong test. Core and Academic are different exams with different centre lists, and a Core result will not satisfy an Australian visa requirement.
• Entering your name differently from the passport. Copy it character by character off the document.
• Choosing a distant centre for an earlier slot. The two weeks you save on the calendar cost more than they return.
• Arriving with a digital or photocopied ID. The day ends at the desk.
• Rebooking straight after a failed payment. If money left your account and no confirmation arrived, contact Pearson before you book again, or you will own two test dates and one usable score.

Step-by-Step: From Decision to Confirmed Seat

1. Confirm which PTE you need by reading the requirement on the university's or the immigration department's own page, not on a summary of it.
2. Measure where you stand. A scored mock or a free assessment shows how far you are from the score you need, and that distance should choose your date.
3. Check your passport is valid and physically in your possession.
4. Open the centre locator at pearsonpte.com with your test type selected, then list every centre inside a distance you can travel rested.
5. Compare dates across all of those centres, not only the closest. A centre forty minutes further away with a seat two weeks later is often the better booking.
6. Type your details straight off the passport and read them back before you pay.
7. Pay, then wait for the confirmation email. Save it with your booking reference.
8. Plan the journey a week ahead, including where you will sleep the night before if the centre is far.

Tips for Nepali Students Testing in India

Plenty of Nepali students study and work in Delhi, Pune, Bengaluru and Kolkata, and sitting PTE where you already live is usually simpler than flying home for it.

• The passport rule is absolute for you. Taking the test outside your country of citizenship, a valid passport is the only document that works, with no local alternative to fall back on.
• Your score report does not care where you sat. A PTE Academic result from Pune and one from Kathmandu are the same result, sent the same way to the same institutions.
• Pay in the currency you earn. If your income is in rupees, booking an Indian centre takes a currency conversion out of the transaction.
• Coaching does not have to be local. Online one-on-one sessions run to your timetable wherever you happen to be sitting the test.
